Connected Justice: It’s more than simply cutting costs

As video becomes more pervasive in our daily lives, we increasingly hear about using live, interactive video to take students on virtual fieldtrips, connect colleagues across the globe and enable better access to healthcare for rural and underserved communities. Collaborative technologies connect people and cut costs across a variety of settings. Another area we’re seeing new, innovative applications is in courts, corrections and law enforcement.

In Dallas County, Texas, for example, 25 to 50 prisoners are processed daily, telepresence systems were installed in the courthouse, the county jails and the infirmary. As one might imagine, transporting prisoners who have already been booked back to the courthouse for another arraignment takes a significant amount of time and, therefore, cost. The process entails the Sheriff’s Office getting a list of all the prisoners facing new or altered charges; have a deputy gather them up from the various facilities in which they are housed and place them in a holding cell; and then bring them all back in to the courthouse together for their new arraignment. When all is said and done (secure a van, get two deputies to transport the prisoners in the van; get through traffic; and then go through security at the other end), it takes at least two hours. However, with the technology on-hand, the county has been able to re-arraign 700 prisoners a month without having to transport them. Arriving Soon in San Francisco – Meeting of the Minds 2012

Smarter and more connected communities – that’s not just a pretty vision, far off into the future. They are being built now, often on the basis of a renewed and intelligent city infrastructure. Keep The P.A.C.E.

         

  In the military, we have a phrase:  “Shoot, Move, and Communicate”.   However, it should really be “Communicate, Move, then Shoot”… because you can’t do either two without communicating first.  However, I’m sure the first adage just sounds cooler… What’s that mean? In any great organization, one of the essential components of any plan is, “How are we going to talk to each other”, whether that be by a simple phone on the desk or a hi-tech secure data/voice/video capability.  In order to have proper Command and Control (C2) over the battlefield and mass, organize, and develop precision maneuver, a plan has to be created that’s efficient, effective, and reliable… most importantly, it has to be REDUNDANT! 21st century government work…how is your workspace changing?

This week the Whitehouse released a Presidential Memorandum — Building a 21st Century Digital Government and unveiled a new mobile initiative intended to reshape how government agencies utilize mobile platforms to serve the public. 

The strategy focuses on providing citizens and an increasingly mobile government workforce access to digital government information and services anywhere, anytime, on any device.

I have the opportunity to work with global government leaders around the world from cities and counties to national government agencies including public safety, the courts, civilian agencies, and national security.  Many are seeing a shift to mobile communications and information sharing and a shift from fixed desktop PCs to smart phones, laptops, and tablets.

A mobile government workforce is more productive, helps government achieve key initiatives such as telework, and enhances the employee experience. 

Remote teleworker initiatives are driving not only a change in where government work is done but also a  shift towards bring your own device (BYOD) initiatives. 

A benefit for this change in the government workspace is the productivity improvements and cost savings that result. Recently, the Telework Exchange and Cisco hosted the “Ramp Up Your Savings: Measuring the Telework Returns” with best practices and tools to measure the benefits of Telework including cost savings.
