October 1st marks the beginning of the 11th annual Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Throughout the month the Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies will be hosting various events throughout the country to discuss new cybersecurity issues, our cybersecurity infrastructure and our ability to prevent and mitigate national cyber threats.
NCSAM is not just about cybersecurity practices for the government but also to educate adults and children about online safety. It is our shared responsibility to ensure we are safe online whether at home, at work or at school. Law enforcement and fire departments around the country are leveraging new technologies to better inform personnel, increase situational awareness, respond to emergencies, and protect citizens. Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) is becoming a reality for many local municipalities as they incorporate modern digital devices within their daily routines. The Internet of Everything (IoE) is really changing the game across the board in public safety.
The Chicago Police Department (CPD), recognized nationally as a technology innovator, is a terrific example. CPD’s CLEAR (Citizen and Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) system is the largest transaction police database in the United States. CLEAR plays a major role in analyzing the City of Chicago’s Operation Virtual Shield (OVS) system, which has a network of over 25,000 cameras. The video surveillance system consists of fixed cameras, a private camera federation, and mobile assets such as video trailers, trucks, helicopters, and boats.

In the public sector, the prevalence of cloud and mobile technologies has completely transformed the way CIOs are achieving their goals. One key takeaway from government experiences in IT Consumption (how organizations and individuals purchase and use information technology assets) is that an organization needs to have the flexibility to adapt in order to meet challenges and maximize opportunities presented by this new environment. If you haven’t read Cisco’s Tae Yoo’s recent post on the Huffington Post ImpactX site, you should. It’s a great look at the power of the Internet of Everything (IoE) to help mankind. Yes, humankind. It’s a powerful statement, but I think it’s true.
With the example of disaster and relief efforts, the post highlights how technology continues to be more accessible every day. When seconds count, such as in the 2010 Haiti earthquake and Superstorm Sandy in 2012, technology is already impacting lives and will continue to get event better.

It’s hard to believe that, just a few years ago, most government employees could only access email from their primary desktop computers. Even those with the ability to access their enterprise e-mail accounts from other devices could only view new messages; archives were stored locally on their desktops. Now it is possible to check email from multiple locations and on multiple devices – 24 hours of the day.
Email was really just the beginning. We’ve arrived at a new technology-consumption landscape – powered by cloud, mobile and even social media – that is fundamentally changing the way we use and purchase information technology tools.
