Technologies I am Thankful For
SAN JOSE, CA - Okay, so I’m a secret fan of the end of the year lists. I always like to peruse what made the previous 12 months new, different and interesting all in one sitting. This has been a good year for Wake Forest football for one thing. This makes me happy. I know that we likely won’t go back to bowl game for another decade (that’s our general cycle), but it has been fun to see us in the top 20 this year and it will be fun to see us play in a bowl game…now that we’re not going to get to play Ohio State in the national championship game, I’m pulling for us to make the Emerald Bowl which is played right up the road at ATT park in San Francisco. I haven’t reached the point of fanatacism where I will fly across the country to see my football team play in a bowl game, but I’m never saying never on this one…I will, however, drive up the road…
So, Thanksgiving is upon us and growing up in my family we would always go around the dinner table and everyone had to say what they were thankful for. I think that is a good thing. As this is a “technology” blog, I’m going to list some of the technology things that I am thankful for. Here goes:
1. Wireless broadband. I’m writing this in my living room and that makes me very happy. (My Linksys router is working like a charm…and yes, Linksys is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cisco, but I bought my Linksys router before Cisco bought Linksys, so my review is above reproach.)
2. Search Engines. Be it Yahoo, Google, MSN, LookSmart or whatever, I am thankful for the ease of use of finding info on the web…and while there are a lot of old pages out there (not the search engines fault), I am thankful that search engines allow me to find the lyrics to that song that I can’t remember but know a few words to or find the quote of FCC Chairman Kevin Martin stating that he already has the authority to punish any bad actors should they abuse their telecom power and net neutrality legislation is not needed.
3. The DVR. Our CEO likes to say that Cisco and the network is changing the way the world works, lives, plays and learns. The DVR clearly has changed the way I play. Big fan. Time-shifting. Fast-forwarding through commericals (sorry, advertisers, but, hey, that’s why they are moving to the web as well as integrating product placements in television shows, such as Cisco phones on “The Office” or “24.”) All good.
4. Mobile e-mail. The crackberry. Treo. Whatever. E-mail whenever, wherever. Standing in line at Peet’s coffee this morning (best coffee, by the way) I can check the morning e-mails and clean out the spam before I get to the office. Productivity x 2.
5. Okay, so I’m running out of things as I’m really just killing time as my wife is on the phone and I can’t yet turn the volume to the Memphis/Georgia Tech game, but, last one would be: Pop-Up Blockers. It’s really the simple things in life, yes?

Anyway, happy Thanksgiving. Tell your family what you are thankful for and DO NOT say you are thankful for a technology. Tell them you are thankful for them and you’ll get that turkey leg or last piece of pumpkin pie or an extra helping of mashed potatoes. Tell them you are thankful for a technology and they’ll likely make you eat all the brussel sprouts and give your pumpkin pie to cousin Eddie.
