New Spectrum Auction in early 2008 for Canada
OTTAWA, CANADA - An interesting story is starting to unfolded in the Canadian wireless arena. Earlier this week, as expected, the federal government announced it would auction 105 MHz of spectrum in 2008 and would seek comment by this spring as to how the auction should be held.
Taken by itself, the announcement is noteworthy. But the real story develops when taking into account the comments Industry Minister Maxime Bernier made later in the week before the House Committee on Industry. Bernier advised that he was planning to raise with Cabinet, plans to ease foreign ownership restrictions on the telecommunications sector.
While those who follow the ICT markets have yet to link the two stories, could it be that the Minister views the auction as an opportunity to attract at least one foreign entrant to the fast-growing wireless market? Given his active role in reducing anti-competitive government regulation in the telecom sector, it doesn’t require a huge leap of faith to draw this conclusion.
The only thing in his way of opening the market to foreign competition is an election. So in the words of Theodore Roosevelt, "the most successful politician is he who says what everybody is thinking most often and in the loudest voice." It looks like Bernier will continue to sound the call for increased competition. So louder Mr. Bernier.... LOUDER!!!
