Enterprise Networks

Enterprises are starting to adopt all types of video usage to significantly increase worker productivity, improve collaboration, reduce costs, move towards Green IT by reducing their carbon footprint, streamline and optimize business operations. Adding new video services radically changes the demands on the network. Video consumes significantly more bandwidth than voice so over-provisioning in the network to avoid resource contention problems is not a viable option. Also, the requirement is not simply about the bandwidth, it is about rich service capabilities that must be enabled in the network; for example, how to protect multimedia sessions in progress against the risk of quality impairment due to intermittent extreme network conditions, and how to efficiently deliver one-to-many interactions. There is a need for the network to be aware and respond to the needs of a range of media and network applications.

A medianet is an intelligent network optimized for rich media; the evolution to a network where video is the dominant traffic. As such, a medianet is a fundamental piece in the realization of a true borderless network, optimizing the network to deliver video anytime, anywhere to any device. By infusing new capabilities into all aspects of the network infrastructure, a medianet enhances the ability of the network to send, deliver and optimize rich media. It automatically optimizes the experience and efficiency in the delivery of multimedia experiences. A medianet utilizes the network intelligence to help simplify network complexity and accelerate deployment of rich media solutions.
According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index, the various forms of video (TV, VoD, Internet Video, and P2P) will exceed 91 percent of global consumer traffic by 2014, and global online video will approach 57 percent of consumer Internet traffic by 2014 (up from 40 percent in 2010).

At CiscoLive 2009 in San Francisco, we announced the Enterprise Medianet Foundation Blueprint that defines the foundation reference architecture for implementing multiple video applications and rich media collaboration. It is also the foundation reference architecture to support future medianet capabilities. The key benefits include validated design guidance for implementing a baseline network infrastructure with consistent Quality of Service recommendations, choosing and sizing appropriate Cisco products, enabling relevant features and functionalities to implement co-existing video and rich media applications on a converged Cisco network infrastructure. To help get your network media-ready, Cisco Advanced Services offers a medianet readiness assessment and deployment service that ensures successful deployments of rich media applications.
