Needle and thread. Fire and wood.  Peanut butter and jelly.  Just a few things that are essential together so that you can sew, keep warm and well, is just yummy.  So what happens when the data center-class server blade for the branch meets applications?  That’s the topic discussed in the 2nd episode of the Inside the Branch: UCS E-series episodes.

Last week was the series premier of our 5 part series on UCSE.  Hugo and Jay discussed the basics of the product and some key facts we should know.  In this episode, Hugo met with Vidya, our guru in charge of Cisco applications for UCSE.

Some examples of Cisco applications certified on the UCSE are:

  1. WAN optimization (WAAS) – WAAS on the UCSE is the most scalable router-integrated option for the WAN optimization solution from Cisco.  It can scale up to 6000 connections and can be placed in a small and medium size branch or remote locations.
  2. Enterprise CDN – The Cisco Enterprise Content Delivery System (ECDS) enables enterprises to efficiently scale live and on-demand video streaming via remote site content caching and prepositioning across multiple video formats.  On the UCSE, ECDS software leverages the up-to 3 TB of local storage and flexibly scales from 100 to 1000 concurrent connections.
  3. Wireless LAN Controller – The virtual WLC is ideal for small and mid-size deployments with a virtual infrastructure and require an on-premises controller. vWLC offers Secure guest access, rogue detection for Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance, and in-branch (locally switched) Wi-Fi voice and video
  4. Video Surveillance Manager – Video surveillance is a key part of any remote location and especially for retail locations.  But these digital video files can take up a lot of bandwidth if uploaded to a remote server and having it in the UCSE gives companies options to store locally and back up later to a remote server when there is less congestion on the WAN.
  5. Unity Connection – Cisco Unity Connection is the premier Cisco voicemail and unified messaging platform with a comprehensive feature set and is based on the same Linux Unified Communications Operating System as Cisco Unified Communications Manager.  You can now deploy that same level of functionality directly to smaller site locations leveraging the Cisco UCSE platform and it’s integrated blade based form factor, reducing footprint and lowering cost.
  6. Survivable Voicemail – Cisco Unity Connection Survivable Remote Site Voicemail (Connection SRSV) is a backup voicemail solution that allows you to receive voice messages during WAN outages. It works in conjunction with Cisco Unified Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) for providing voicemail service to a branch when the connectivity with the central Connection voicemail service is lost. Connection SRSV can be installed on any supported Unity Connection platform including UCSE.

Stay tuned for our next episode of Inside the UCS E-Series airing on October 31st: Hugo knocks down a truck!
