Catalyst 6500: Old Car or Super Soldier?

Recently, bloggers have alternately compared the Catalyst 6500 to the fifteen-year old car they finally got rid of and to a super soldier for the new millennium. Which is it? Being a Cisco employee, I might be a bit biased. And, being a car guy, I’m really tempted to pick apart the old car analogy, but I think my Detroit roots might start to show. Campus Access Switching – Right-size, don’t compromise

Cisco Catalyst 4500E, which we refreshed completely in October last year with the Supervisor 7-E, new line cards, and open application platform (IOS XE), has been winning kudos – both from customers and press. Customers tell us they value the scalability, integrated high-availability, and application visibility that Supervisor Engine 7-E brings to campus access switching. They also tell us that although Supervisor 7-E is great for larger campus deployments, it needs a complementary supervisor that offers rich network services but is better optimized for smaller and medium sized campus deployments.

Cisco UPOE at Interop New York

Cisco Universal Power Over Ethernet (UPOE) can power a wide range of devices resiliently over the network with 60-watts of power per port. We showed a few of these devices getting powered through UPOE at Interop. Customers looking to deploy virtual desktops were impressed with the fact that they don’t have to pull 110/220V circuits for new campuses. Here is a short video of me walking through the demos at the show.
