Innovating Together Like Never Before – in Iceland?

“Innovation is the central issue in economic prosperity.” – Michael Porter

There’s been some interesting coverage this week about President Obama’s State of the Union address. And while pundits on all sides debate the ideologies as well as the details, it’s easy to agree on one of his key points – that innovation is the key to getting the economy and the country back on track.

Given the importance of innovation, isn’t it worth taking a fresh look at innovation itself? Many “innovations” such as the Declaration of Independence, the Apollo Space Program, even clever ad campaigns, were all realized by having several smart people in one place to develop ideas together. But now that’s all changed.

Seamless Access To Information

I recently saw an executive carrying five mobile devices. There was an iPhone in one pocket, a BlackBerry in another, an Andriod in his jacket, a Droid Pro stuffed somewhere else, and an iPad in the back of his pants. It made me wonder when we’ll gain the ability to have one device (of our choice) that can do it all rather than be forced to roll like the human equivalent of a clown car.

A wave of consumer devices has flooded the enterprise and caused some tsunami-type problems for IT and for employees. Companies need to secure this constant parade of devices, and employees want unencumbered access to business information, anytime, all the time, from any device they want.

How Do You Plan for 2011 – Part 3: Embrace Mobile Computing the Smart Way

Gadgets, gadgets and more gadgets. They are coming like mushrooms after a soaking spring shower.  More than 80 tablets were launched at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early Jan. On top of that, Microsoft announced that a future version of its Windows OS will run on ARM-based chips that power mobile phones and tables, in addition to the x86 chips used for PCs. A 4G wireless version of Cisco’s mobile business tablet Cius made news with a joint announcement with Verizon Wireless. It’s a sign of the times that the buzzword “app” was voted the 2010 “Word of the Year” by the American Dialect Society. And one more thing: IDC predicts that in 2012, the number of mobile devices is likely to reach 462 million, exceeding PC shipments.

Today, almost one in five (18%) employees is not allowed to use their iPods at wok, based on Part II of Cisco’s Connected World Report.  But this trend is unlikely to continue.  Employees expect to have more flexible work options including mobility.  So how do you prepare your organization’s mobile computing strategy, to help achieve best employee productivity and user experience?
