The announcement earlier this week focused on the Borderless Networks services with new capabilities for Centralized Policy, Unified Management and Automated Video and Voice.  For more information on the announcement, see Marie Hattar’s blog.

Automated Video and Voice highlights the unique capabilities in the network infrastructure to simplify the deployment and optimize the network for video.

Why video? 

Because it is not a question of IF it is coming to Enterprise networks, but WHEN.   As you can see from the chart from Forrester Research (Jan. 2011) the adoption for video applications and technologies is on the significant growth path because they are adding value for businesses.   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                 

Video for businesses provides an effective way to communicate, collaborate, educate and protect

The requests for Telepresence and company-wide broadcasts are coming from the executive suites as they seek better ways to communicate with their top customers and their top teams.  Employees and managers are turning on video conferencing features in their WebEx and Microsoft OCS because they expect to communicate with their colleagues the same way they communicate with Skype at home.  In fact, in the Cisco Connected World Report from October 2010 found that 39% of end users expect video to become primary mode of communication. Finally,  Facilities departments are using video as their way to protect with IP Video Surveillance and to communicate with Digital signage.

The same Cisco Connected World report also summarized that 7 out of 10 IT Decision Makers expect the use of video to increase in their organizations, which is why Cisco has designed their infrastructure with optimizing video in mind. 

The announcements for Medianet, delivered on Cisco Catalyst Switches and Cisco routers, provide capabilities that will help reduce the cost and complexity of deploying video, as well as assist in planning, visibility, troubleshooting and monitoring.  If you have watched posts about Medianet in the past, you may have seen discussions on some of these capabilities already:

Medianet gives you the ability to assess the impact of each application (video, voice and data) in your network, so you can assure your business critical applications have the right network resources and configuration.

While Medianet optimizes the network for video, the Cisco ISR G2 also places a special focus on ad hoc video conferencing in branch offices.  Ad Hoc video conferencing is particularly taxing on networks from a planning and utilization standpoint, so the video conferencing bridging capabilities both optimize calls within the branch and avoid WAN backhaul traffic to the MCU.

WHEN is your Video deployment?

If your network architecture has been piecemeal to date, you’ll want to get in front of this video trend because a best-effort architecture doesn’t effectively scale for video.
