A Special October for Cyber Security

October 4, 2010
at 1:16 pm PST

Stop. Think. Connect. It’s the main theme for cyber security awareness that you and I will hear again and again. October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA). Founded by volunteers from 7 companies in 2001, NCSA has grown into a strong cyber security advocate and a great example of public and private partnerships.  Last year alone, NCSA reached out to an estimated 40,000,000 people through their media campaigns, local meetings and other activities.  The National Cyber Security Awareness Month was first launched by NCSA in 2004.

Cisco will join the community to support this great event. Here are some highlights of activities where Cisco is involved:

  • An updated cyber security awareness web site giving you the information and resources you need for better cyber security, including tips and recommendations for families, students, teachers, small businesses and governments.
  • Participation in the official October 4 launch of National Cyber Security Awareness Month at the Seattle Public Library.
  • Participation in the October 6 “A Unified Message for Cybersecurity” event led by NCSA at Intel Headquarters (Silicon Valley, CA).
  • Mission 2011: Improved Cyberspace Security”, a webcast and panel discussion on creating a national strategy for cybersecurity awareness (Reagan Building, Washington DC) on October 21.
  • A webinar, “Protect Your Business with Cyber-Security Strategies” on October 28, sponsored by Bloomberg and Cisco.
  • Social media engagements by Cyber Security subject matter experts:

-A stream of 30+ tweets by Christopher Burgess, Senior Security Advisor at Cisco, spread over the month for @CiscoSecurity.

- Blog posts and op-eds by Lori Bush, Cisco solution manager in Public Sector, and Secretary of the National Cyber Security Alliance.
- Global cyber security education for Cisco employees.

Cisco is a proud member of the National Cyber Security Alliance, and we support their continued efforts to engage citizens in this important endeavor.

Stop. Think. Connect. Stop for a moment. Think before acting. Connect responsibly. Keep it safe in cyber space!
