Today, Cisco announced the new release of the Cisco VXI Smart Solution. Part of the announcement is, of course, enhancements in our Borderless Networks architecture to enable our customers to deploy a secure, reliable, and fast virtual desktop infrastructure.

With Cisco WAAS version 4.5, released last year, Cisco WAAS can natively accelerate and optimize Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, overcoming the performance and cost challenges of deploying virtual desktops over the WAN. With the upcoming release of version 5.1.1, WAAS will also support Citrix’s Multi-stream ICA protocol. This will allow customers to apply Quality of Service (QoS) to help ensure optimal user experience. Citrix’s blog details the feature but basically, it’s like having extra different levels of HOV lanes in the highway so that you give priority to the cars that needs to get to their destination the fastest.

The second portion of our enhancement includes the support of single sign-on for XenDesktop and XenApp with the Cisco ASA version 9.0 release. Whether the user is logging in from a mobile device such as a tablet or laptop, whether they are in the office or outside, whether it is a corporate or a personal device, ASA provides a seamless unified interface to access their content. With Cisco WAAS and ASA, customers deploying virtual desktops can be assured that the Cisco network is VXI ready and secure.

These solutions will be elucidated further at Citrix Synergy Barcelona. If you’re going to Citrix Synergy, please come visit us at the Cisco booth (#6215) and meet with the experts to discuss the new features we’re announcing and get hands-on experience with the demos. You can also learn about our VXI Smart Solution in theatre presentations that will be running throughout the conference in our booth.
