Slovak students test their IT muscle

- February 9, 2010 - 4 Comments

Slovakia’s first national IT Fitness Test was launched earlier this month. Over the next weeks, students from over 830 secondary schools, colleges and universities will put to test their IT knowledge, digital literacy and skills in computers and networks.

The test is organized by the Slovak Ministry of Education and the IT Association as part of the e-Skills Week initiative of the European Commission. Cisco Slovakia and several other organizations have joined as supporters and Frantisek Jakab, Cisco Networking Academy manager is leading the IT Fitness Test project and acts as chairman of the Testing Committee.

The online IT Fitness Test includes 24 questions focusing on two areas: the use of computers and applications, and the use of internet. Besides theoretical topics there are problem solving tasks to test the ability of students to quickly find reliable information on the web. Several Slovak celebrities – including singers, television moderators and many others – are also joining the initiative and are putting their digital literacy to test.

e-Skills Week is also a busy time for Cisco Networking Academy students in Slovakia, as they are preparing for the national final of the Cisco Networking Academy Games, that will take place on March 4th. The winners of both initiatives, the IT Fitness Test and Networking Academy Games, will be announced on March 5th, to coincide with the closing event of the pan-European e-Skills Week. And to make sure that the grand finale is properly captured, Cisco will be awarding the winners of both contests with Flip cameras.

e-Skills Week aims to raise awareness of the growing demand of highly skilled ICT practitioners. A new foresight report on monitoring e-Skills demand and supply in Europe anticipates that there will be an excess demand for ICT practitioners again by 2013, and by 2015 it will reach a non-negligible quantity.
