Emerging Countries

One of Australia’s most prestigious and hallowed sporting grounds is the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which is where Test Cricket was first played in 1883 between Australia and England.  While some things have not changed about the majesty of the sport since 1883, market trends indicate that fans’ expectations have changed.  We are living in an environment where sports fans are choosing the couch over the stadium due to the media-rich experience it offers, with live statistics and interactive replays the norm.

The Sydney Cricket Ground Trust, which oversees the SCG as well as neighbouring Allianz Stadium (Sydney Football Stadium), today announced its decision to make two of Australia’s most iconic sports venues Australia’s most technically advanced and fan friendly stadia with the Cisco Connected Stadium Wi-Fi solution.

The Cisco Connected Stadium Wi-Fi solution will be rolled out by 2014 and is designed to create a match-day experience offering an exceptional level of engagement during major sports events. The new technology not only satisfies a demand for connectivity in what becomes a congested cellular network on match-days but has the capability to provide patrons with unique benefits such as access to game-day and venue information as well as replays and the ability to plug into ticketing and merchandise point of sale.

“Fan expectations are greater than ever, mandating a more connected sporting venue that enables fans to share and engage with more content and people from any device, anywhere in the stadium. This evolutionary move by the SCG Trust to connect its patrons is an important one as venues fight against the home viewing experience. The recently released Cisco Internet of Everything Value Index found that only 0.6% of connectable objects are connected to the Internet today but that will change in coming years, positioning the SCG and the SFS as world class environments to watch sport.

With the untapped potential of the Internet of Everything, in the future we can expect to see balls and bats, sidelines and goalposts connected to the Internet and networked to patrons at venues to give real-time statistical analysis of the game. Combined with the atmosphere that venues like the SCG and Allianz Stadium are famous for creating, the overall match-day experience should see the precinct pushed into the upper echelons of world class sporting venues, matching famous stadiums like Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Spain and the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in the U.S., which have already rolled out Cisco Connected Stadium technology.

With Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Aussie Rules and Football games all being played at these two venues, the Cisco Connected Stadium Wi-Fi solution at the SCG and Allianz Stadia will provide the perfect entertainment platform for fans from many different sports to be able to experience this new match day experience.
