Technology continues to evolve at a break-neck pace, and our definition of the workplace — and how we work with our customers, partners and stakeholders — has expanded beyond the four walls of an office building. The adoption of mobile devices and cloud-based services has created an anytime, anywhere work culture. At the same time, global competition is at its greatest level, and organizations must re-evaluate how they can remain competitive and market relevant in this rigorous environment.
The need to provide products and services faster, reduce cost of operations and automate mundane tasks in order to stay competitive continues to accelerate in today’s digital world. As such, new skill sets and continued talent development are needed that address these changes currently impacting the way we work inside and outside of an organization. This isn’t an obstacle just central to the U.S. or certain markets. For instance, sales and marketing departments have had to adjust to this digital transformation; nowadays the vast majority of marketing is now done online through mobile and social channels. Manufacturing skills are also changing, the way we design products are changing, and the way we collaborate is changing. Across the board, significant development of new technology skills is needed.
Approximately 90 percent of technology jobs are expected to change in this new digital economy in order to keep up with new business models and technologies, which leaves us with a massive skills transition in the workforce. At the same time, there will be an estimated shortage of between 38-40 million college-educated workers by 2020, which means organizations will be competing for a relatively small pool of talent.
To keep employees up to speed on the skills they now require mandates access to pertinent information and learning, and real-time access to experts on the job, every day.

Digitization. This topic was top of mind for many of the 2,500 world business and government leaders at the recent World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Digitization is the full-scale adoption of computer- and Internet-enabled technologies by consumers, businesses and governments; it is important because it can grow economies and create jobs.

It is amazing how a vision can start, grow, morph and become a reality. Van White, President of The Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) and Rochester City School District School Board President, had a vision, and he had a dream. His dream was to bring together students from across the county to have a face-to-face dialogue about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s speech, “I Have a Dream.”
On January 15, Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, students in classrooms from across the country, in Rochester, NY; New York City, NY; Camden, NJ; Tampa, FL; Tulsa, OK; Pontiac, MI; Ferguson, MO, and Los Angeles, CA came together in a 90-minute conversation to explore their viewpoints and feelings on civil rights. When talking about whether or not something is important in modern-day life, my Millennial sons often ask, “Is that really a thing?” For example, renting a dog on Craigslist, is that a thing?
I’m here to tell you that the Internet of Everything (IoE) is really a thing in Education, and the use cases for IoE are bound only by our imaginations. Imagine facial-recognition software for online courses that will be able to monitor and determine student engagement and provide that feedback to teachers.
Andrew Barbour in his eCampus News article, “How to prepare for everything,” discusses in great detail how the Internet of Things and the Internet of Everything is helping colleges and universities to decrease costs, increase efficiency, and improve student outcomes.
