Happy 75th Birthday to our Golden Gate Bridge!

According to John Morgridge, Cisco’s former CEO, the founders hit on the name and logo while driving to Sacramento to register the company — they saw the Golden Gate Bridge framed in the sunlight  and that’s how our Cisco logo was born.  They hoped the logo would shape the future, “convey something about creating an authentic life and making a living at something you believe in, in a place you love, with people you really like to be with”.

Back in the late 1800s, the only way to cross the bay was by ferry.  It was in 1923 when California legislature passed the act approving the project to build the bridge.  On May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge finally opened, connecting San Francisco and Marin for the first time.  Back then, we built bridges to connect different parts of the bay.  Since then, we have built technologies to connect classrooms in schools K-12 and universities around the world.

At Cisco, we call that the Connected Learning Experience.  Connected Learning helps educators enhance teaching and learning through video, collaboration and virtualization.  Video is helping schools and teachers connect and expand curriculum options, maximize scarce resources, all while increasing student engagement.

While Connected Learning is the type of education required in the 21st century, connecting students and teachers every day, our beautiful Golden Gate Bridge helps connect over 100,000 cars a day.

Happy Birthday Golden Gate Bridge!  You are so beautiful!

  2. OMG, I feel so dumb. I never knew that the Cisco logo was the GG Bridge! I always assumed, coming from my wiredog background in the AF, it was a digital signal as seen from monitoring equipement. That was back in the day when I wanted to become Cisco Certified.

I have some Cisco shirts with the old logo from 1999/2001. What’s interesting is the change in Cisco’s logo. Well, they all depict the Golden Gate bridge…hence here’s one for the blog…:-) http://twitpic.com/9yll3y

    Cheers
