On Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending a kind of roadshow of technical experts Cisco switching: From Campus to Data Center: Cisco Switching Deep Dive
This is a day-long seminar inviting customers and potential customers to find out about and discuss the technical specifics, capabilities, and applications of Cisco’s entire switching portfolio. The seminars are being held all over the US from the end of October and through the beginning of December. Here’s a little video I put together from the day and some notes on interesting things I saw. [Sorry for the shaky video!]
- There was a lot of customer-to-customer interaction. Always a good thing!
- Big interest in UPOE: “Imagine the money you’ll save on power cabling and distribution with UPOE powering phones, turrets, screens, telepresence endpoints, and more”. Have a look at this recent blog post for more info on UPOE.
- Stackpower: turning the power supplies in a group of stacked switches into a unified pool of power.
- Lots of discussion around Medianet‘s capabilities such as: tracking and troubleshooting media flows and generating synthetic video traffic to test network impact.
- 802.1x Monitor Mode as a way to ease deployment of 802.1x by being able to turn on policy function without executing decisions to test and verify configuration and look for needed exceptions to head off some of the bigger implementation headaches before users feel them.
- There are 130 features on the 6500 roadmap for next year. It will be advancing into 2020 and beyond.
- When talking about line-rate 10G ports, remember that switches don’t exist in a vacuum. What happens to “line-rate” when you connect those switches to each other? Take the broader view to keep from being caught short in production!
