So is it Virtual Desktops, or Virtual Workspaces? and… VMware Partner Exchange is Next Week!
It’s actually BOTH, which I’ll get to in a minute… First, are you going to VMware Partner Exchange? Planning out your agenda for next week? If so, you’ve got some great opportunities to learn about VXI with VMware. Before we get to the good stuff, I want to highlight something that we often get asked, namely the difference between VXI and desktop virtualization, ie: the title of this post!
Think of VXI as a platform that spans Cisco’s architectures to enable you to deliver:
1.) Virtual desktops – employing the market’s fastest growing blade-server, purpose-built with large scale virtualization in mind – Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS), coupled with industry-leading virtualization software from VMware (vSphere + View). At its core, VXI delivers this basic capability, enabled by two industry leaders offering a joint-validated solution with leading storage providers. If you want a proof-point of the performance and scalability of this solution, check out this whitepaper we commissioned with Principled Technologies, testing VMware View on our UCS B230 Server Blade. Customers are reaping the benefits of delivering not just VDI, but also app virtualization, terminal services, etc. using Cisco VXI with UCS as their data center platform.
2.) Virtual workspaces – but what happens when you need an integrated environment that converges your user’s desktop, communications, and rich media content? An environment that follows them on any device, deliverable across any network? We refer to that as the new virtual workspace – one that combines your PC-centric, phone-centric and video-centric modes of productivity. VXI is the platform that not only delivers virtual desktops as you currently know them, but also virtual workspaces that integrate the full suite of collaborative technologies that workers need to be productive. Key to delivering virtual workspaces is not just the collaborative apps, but also the ability to tap into the distributed intelligence in the network (think: security, wireless LAN, WAN optimization, QoS, etc.) These assets have new relevancy in delivering a secure, pervasively accessible uncompromised user experience. VXI is realized through these capabilities and the jointly validated solutions and technologies from Cisco and VMware, delivered in a single platform. Check out the VXI with View Design Guide to learn more.
The key thing here is that VXI provides this platform to address BOTH approaches, based on where you are in the journey. Some organizations will embark on this journey, starting with virtual desktops, targeted at some very specific use cases and worker profiles, with the objectives of improving desktop image management, security, and addressing the expanding number of user device choices. Somewhere along that journey they may decide that they want to evolve to an holistic environment that addresses a wider array of profiles including mobile/knowledge workers, call center operations and other use cases where integrated access to the full suite of media-rich collaborative tools (IP telephony, web conferencing, HQ business video, etc.) combined with virtual desktops makes for greater business agility and worker productivity. VXI does that too!
Next week at Partner Exchange, you’ll have the opportunity to learn how Cisco and VMware are making this happen. Let me point to a couple key things you don’t want to miss if you’re focused on VMware End-User Computing.
