With all the of the changes happening with the Data Center, the IT department is constantly faced with the challenge of balancing “the new coolness” (Virtualization, 10Gb Ethernet, Cloud Computing, Unified <insert_technology_here>) and still being able to manage the daily operations of the business. Adding to the challenge is the changing architectures that these new technologies bring to the Data Center.

Just throwing a new piece of hardware at the operational problem is not always an option any more. In some cases, the Data Center (or rack) may not have the capacity to handle that additional device. In virtualized environments, the box may no longer have visibility into intra-VM traffic, or VM mobility. The world where a cable or port defining a demarcation point between IT groups is rapidly changing.

As part of Data Center Business Advantage architecture, Cisco’s Unified Network Services brings greater flexibility for IT to deploy services that match the needs of the Data Center.  By allowing customers to deploy network, security and application-acceleration services in either physical or virtual (VM) modes, Cisco continues to provide operation-level visibility (policy-management, logging, monitoring, troubleshooting) as the Data Center evolves and becomes more virtualized.

The flexibility of Unified Network Services also creates a simpler migration as customers move applications from Dev/Test environments to Production environments and potentially utilize public Cloud Computing services in the future. By having the option to deploy hardware or software-based services, customers can better align budgets and costs in each phase of deployment to the required performance level needs.
