Converged Networks vs Mononetworks

May 22, 2011 at 1:01 am PST

In 1950 Time magazine published an article about an apocryphal story about former U.S. Senator (D-Florida) George Smathers:

According to the yarn, Smathers had a little speech for cracker voters, who were presumed not to know what the words meant except that they must be something bad. The speech went like this: “Are you aware that [opponent] Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper before his marriage habitually practiced celibacy.”

Brilliant! If you were in Pepper’s shoes, would you deny these types of charges? How can you face people who look at you with suspicion when not only are the accusations true, but can actually be the right things to do? (especially in 1950)

I love that story. Even though it’s false (Smathers reputedly offered $10,000 to anyone who could prove that he said it, an offer that went unclaimed up to his death) it provides a cautionary tale of just how someone can use an audience’s confusion against their opponents and yet still be telling the truth at the same time.

United Bank of India to rollout Cisco WAAS solution across 1,600 branches

May 20, 2011 at 1:27 pm PST

This is a great win for our WAN acceleration group. Our WAAS (Wide Area Application Services) product line is a key component of our Unified Network Services (UNS) portfolio.

As reported in InformationWeek (click here for full article):

Cisco today announced that United Bank of India, one of India’s leading nationalized banks, has chosen to deploy Cisco’s Wide Area Network (WAN) optimization solution across all of its 1,600 plus branches. The solution, to be deployed by Wipro, is amongst the largest globally, for any Public Sector Bank. The network will help enable UBI’s vision of providing the benefits of banking to rural and agricultural economies, and to India’s burgeoning small and medium-sized enterprise sector.
The solution will include 1,600 plus Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) devices, Cisco’s WAN optimization solution, in addition to application accelerators for the data centre and disaster recovery sites.

Cisco UCS – What’s Not To Love?

I make no bones about it I love the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS).   Yes, you’re reading a Cisco Blog…so you’d expect nothing less, but understand I came to love the system long before I was ever a Cisco employee.  In fact it’s the reason I’m here – well that and the paycheck.  :-)  You can read a bit about my “conversion” here:  Something to Believe In.  Or if you’d prefer to watch me talk about the UCS as a GE employee take a peek here

Cisco UCS wins the Best of Show award at Microsoft TechEd 2011

Great news on the Cisco UCS momentum as we continue to gain market share. The innovative Cisco UCS B250 M2 blade server today won the “Best of Show” award in the Hardware and Storage category at Microsoft TechEd 2011 in Atlanta. There were more than 300 submissions in various categories, out of which 47 made it to the finals. We blogged about this in detail earlier here.

This esteemed award, along with the announcements made earlier this week about Cisco’s solution for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, and participation in the Hyper-V Fast Track program further validate that UCS is a very compelling solution for efficiently running Microsoft Enterprise application and private cloud solutions.
