With VPLEX and OTV, Cisco, EMC and VCE change the Mobility and Disaster Recovery Game (Part2)

Today, Cisco Live “World of Solutions ” (the show floor) opens at 4:30 pm PDT  in San Diego Convention Center.  One of the marquis demos has been shown at EMC World with a lot of interest.

This blog is the second part of a two part blog dedicated to this Mobility and Business Continuance demo, created by Cisco, EMC and VCE.  In part 1 (read blog here) I invited EMC Colin Durocher (@OtherColin) to share with us his perspective on the demo.  As promised,  I come back today with more details on the demo,  including a video interview conducted by Cisco Daniel Bogda (@dabogda) with EMC Craig Chapman (@VirtualChappy)  and VCE Tom Chatham (@tchatham).  I asked also Tom, who already wrote here, to bring  his  perspective on the demo.

Tom Chatham is a Principal vArchitect with VCE Corporate Engineering responsible for delivering VCE solutions, customer solution testing, technical marketing events and evangelizing private cloud. 16 years of experience in the industry, most of that time spent focused on storage, virtualization and unified computing. Including extensive network infrastructure, systems architecture and business continuity.

“VCE is excited to kick things off this week at CiscoLive! Between our big booth, speaking sessions, and demos we’ve got a ton to talk about (www.vce.com/events/cisco-live).
Like we did at EMC World,  for this year’s  CiscoLive! show VCE wanted to kick it up a notch with LIVE demonstrations of all the cool technologies we have at our fingertips.

We have a number of VblockTM Systems going to Cisco Live! (and VMworld in August) so it made perfect sense to show off our Workload Mobility Solution. Besides, isn’t cloud all about the ability to offer services from anywhere?

We have three Vblock 300 systems located in the VCE, EMC and Cisco booths. An additional network aggregation rack has been added to each Vblock system to house Nexus 7010 switches, EMC RecoverPoint appliances and EMC VPLEX engines. Panduit provided 1000 feet of fiber trunk cable containing 6 pair of fiber, which has been hung from the ceiling between booths.

The Nexus 7010 switches are providing our core network services, making each booth it’s own data center. RecoverPoint and VMware Site Recovery Manager are handling traditional long haul disaster recovery. VPLEX Metro is providing Active-Active storage clustering capabilities. This is the ability to stretch a VMware vSphere cluster between two sites today, and up to four in the future.  VPLEX Metro provides storage array block level LUN consistency and data availability while OTV on the Nexus 7000 series switches provide layer 2 network services.

Let’s take a step back for a moment and look at what makes this “cool”. Traditionally, migrating data and applications in or between data centers involves manual steps and data copies, where IT would either make physical backups or use data replication services to handle getting the data from side A to side B.

Intelligent Automation at Cisco Live in San Diego #CLUS

Are you ready for the biggest Cisco event of the year? We’ve been working on demos, speaking sessions, and social events for the conference – and it’s finally here.

The Intelligent Automation team are converging in force on San Diego for Cisco Live.  Our solutions will be covered in more than a dozen conference sessions and several theater presentations – featured in topics ranging from cloud management and big data to BYOD and VXI.

And here are our demos featured in the Cisco data center booth at the World of Solutions expo:

  • Tidal Enterprise Scheduler on Hadoop – this demo shows how to increase the value of big data environments through better information flow.
  • Network Services Manager – a flexible, policy-driven approach to managing and controlling network services in a multi-tenant data center.
  • VXI Orchestration – provision virtual desktop services on-demand with Intelligent Automation, in minutes instead of days or weeks.

Intelligent Automation for Cloud and Network Services Manager will also be featured in the CloudVerse area, highlighting our Unified Management capabilities for cloud orchestration and automation.

Our cloud solutions will be featured in theater presentations at the VCE and NetApp booths, as well as a demo in the VCE booth. Some of our other Intelligent Automation technology partners like Comptel, rPath, and Zenoss – as well as channel partners including Presidio and WWT – will also be at the event showcasing our collaboration.  See VCE’s press release featuring Intelligent Automation for Cloud.

To make it easy for you to help you pinpoint the Intelligent Automation team and navigate through the conference, here are some tips for your agenda:

Life in the Fast Lane: A SQL Server Sunday in Orlando and More

Today as a world-wide launch sponsor Cisco participated in Microsoft’s SQL Server 2012 U.S. Symposium Event “The New World of Data” here in Orlando. The event, held before the start of the big Tech Ed North America show focused, on the new SQL Server 2012 release and its capabilities for supporting data management and business intelligence scenarios.

Cisco has invested with our storage partners EMC and NetApp in key SQL Server solutions offered through our Cisco Validated Design (CVD) program. Based on Cisco UCS for the compute platform and Nexus for the network platform, the CVDs support various SQL Server scenarios such as OLTP, Data Warehouse, and SQL Server consolidations (this is provided through assessment programs available through the Cisco Field).

For those of you attending Tech Ed this week in Orlando, please feel free to drop our Cisco booth, #1613. We’ll have technology demonstrations on: Cisco UCS, UCS Manager, VDI, and Nexus 1000V. Also, register for a chance to win one of our daily prizes – a trip to live life in the fast lane…so to speak… at the Exotic Driving Experience at Walt Disney World!

Are We There Yet: Cisco and SDN?

So, with CiscoLive! only a couple of days away, there are a lot of people that are going to be seeing their hard work come to fruition for those of you lucky to be attending our show in San Diego.  From a Data Center perspective, we have a show presence bursting with demos (really, we had to call an audible to handle all the demos) and any number of sessions of all technical levels (you can even check me out covering ITaaS basics in PSODCT-3863).  If you want a more targeted briefing, swing by the Cisco booth and schedule a briefing on any number of topics.

From a network programmability perspective, check out our bag insert to give you a quick snapshot of things to check out (note: there are iPad giveaways involved).  For those of you on the show floor, flag me down and say “hi”.  For those of you who cannot make it to San Diego this year, check out Cisco Live 365.

See you in San Diego!

UCS Navigation @ Cisco Live 2012 in San Diego

As I prepare for an exciting week @ Cisco Live, I quickly found that I wanted to be at three places at the same time, so I decided to put together a navigation aid for the Cisco UCS related sessions.  We expect almost 15000 delegates to attend and hope the navigator helps you if you will be among them. If you are new to UCS and would like to see why more than 13000 customers are using the Cisco UCS check out the Solutions Keynote: Data Center and Cloud Solutions by Dr. David Yen Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Data Center Group (Wed Jun 13 at 12:30 PM).  For a high-level overview go through this presentation my colleague Thomas Cloyd put together, and we presented at EMC World last month.

Cisco Live is all about education; so don’t be surprised by the large number of UCS demos, seminar, technical breakouts, partner case studies and labs.  The navigator below should help you prioritize the sessions to attend.

What is Cisco UCS?

If you want an introduction to UCS then the following sessions should be interesting
