IT infrastructures are increasingly complex and include a broad range of technologies and platforms hosted in physical, virtual and cloud environments. Cisco UCS has become a world leading server platform in large part because the unique UCS architecture enables organization to harness the power of virtualization and dramatically simplify infrastructure management.
Splunk is a great complement to Cisco UCS because Splunk also helps organizations deal with the complexity of vast multi-vendor, multi-product, and multi-site environments. Splunk is a platform for real-time big data analytics which enables end-to-end, cross-tier visibility across applications, physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructure.
Do you need insights into your UCS server performance? Would it be valuable to troubleshoot application issues across server, storage, networking, and other domains? Are you already using Splunk to “… make machine data accessible, usable and valuable…”? Then you need to be using the just updated Splunk Add-on for Cisco UCS.
Splunk’s first (and only) out-of-the-box integration for server environments, Splunk integration with Cisco UCS provides real-time operational visibility not just across Cisco UCS domains but across multiple applications and infrastructure tiers. This enables organizations to identify & resolve problems faster, proactively monitor systems & infrastructure, track key performance indicators & understand trends & patterns of activity & behavior.
The Splunk add-on for Cisco UCS allows a Splunk Enterprise administrator to collect UCS performance, inventory, and fault data from Cisco UCS Manager using the UCS XML API. All the data is and can be integrated with other Splunk applications for products such as Cisco ASA Firewalls or Cisco Nexus Switches or Microsoft Exchange. Did you know that Splunk has over 20 integrations for Cisco products?
If you are thinking about adding Splunk insights into your environment, this is even more of a reason to do it on Cisco UCS servers. Last November, Ragu Nambiar blogged about a joint reference architecture with Splunk that improves performance up to 25x over the Splunk reference hardware. Cisco also published a Solution Brief. Look for updates on the reference architecture from Ragu soon.
Will you be at Cisco Live next week? Be sure to go to Splunk’s booth (#2319) to see the UCS app in action (or a number of the other integrations) or join the Big Data Analytics Demonstrations Booth Tours and find Splunk in Cisco’s Connected Transportation IoT, Security Solutions and Enterprise Networks Pavilions.

I am so glad that Todd is next up in our Why I Love Big Data Partner Series, because he is definitely excited about the potential ways Big Data unlocks the value of IoE. Please come by CiscoLive and see Cisco, Cloudera, and Tableau use data-driven, predictive insights to help medical teams improve quality of care and healthcare outcomes.
Todd Talkington, Tableau Software, Sr. Technical Partner Manager
Todd Talkington has been in the software industry for 15 years and at Tableau for He has had a focus on building out solutions that help Tableau customers see and understand their data, through Tableau Technology Partners.
As technical partner manager for Tableau, I am having so much fun doing my job. Why? Because we are right in the middle of the big data craze. People are finding amazing ways to use all of the information. I had to buy a new refrigerator this weekend, which was bad. I was amazed that the manufacturer can now connect to my fridge when it breaks down and run diagnostics. Ford Motor has been testing cars that are sending back 250 gig of sensor data back to Ford…..PER HOUR!
Yes, things are changing quickly. This year I wrote about the top 7 Trends in Big Data. One of the top predictions we made was that the traditional ecosystem would change. Technologies like Cisco Data Integration are allowing customers to bring data into one place, so they can better get to the needed data. Hadoop has become the new normal in the datacenter for storage. Other technologies to allow us to more easily clean and transform the data. It is amazing how the ecosystem has changed in just a few short years.

Cisco Live US 2015, Cisco’s premier education and training destination for IT professionals worldwide, kicks off next week at San Diego. More than 25000 customers and partners converge to network and share their experiences, and potentially meet new peers onsite. This year is particularly special as John Chambers introduces new Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins on stage to co-host the keynote.
Like you, I am eagerly awaiting the keynote set for Monday June 8, 3 PM local time. John and Chuck will discuss emerging technology and business trends and their implications for Cisco, its customers, and its solutions. .
There are several other keynotes in addition, such as Industry keynote by Cisco Exec Karen walker, Guest keynote by Mike Rowe, Luminary keynote by Dr. Peter Diamandis, so prepare your agenda in advance to get a broad exposure.
For the remainder of this blog I will focus on Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and the ACI highlights. The logical place to start is with Soni Jiandani’s Innovation Talk on topic “Fast Track to Fast IT: Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure” scheduled for June 10, 9 AM. Soni hosts Symantec CIO Sheila Jordan and both discuss how ACI helps deliver a simple, secure and smart solution that delivers on the promise of Fast IT. Soni will also have new updates about the ACI ecosystem but we cannot give away the surprise here – you will have to attend her session to find out. Soni’s session always sets the tone for the rest of the ACI presence at the show.
Let me now segue into ACI Breakout sessions. ACI breakouts feature prominently among a large collection of 600 plus breakout sessions this year with several experts addressing hot topics in Operations, deployment, and eco-system. I will recommend a few breakouts that I consider relevant to current Data Center trends and ACI deployments. First and foremost, let me talk about Cisco Exec Shashi Kiran’s breakout session on Data Center and Cloud Strategy, slated for June 10, 10 AM. Shashi will provide excerpts of how with acceleration of digital business, CIOs and LOB owners map their DC and cloud strategy to deliver better business outcomes. Shashi is a phenomenal speaker and will cover such exciting topics as SDN, Big Data, IOE and how these come together to create a compelling architectural play. So, mark this as a must-attend session.
Many customers have expressed their interest in hearing how ACI helps operationally from application provisioning and trouble-shooting standpoint. Harry Petty, Director of Marketing, Cisco systems brings you exactly that perspective in his breakout session. Harry will give a detailed view of simplifying Day-0,1,2 operations in Application centric Data centers, and in particular focuses on how Cisco ACI addresses the challenges of service quality, secure and reliable application delivery, agility and simplified operations of cloud infrastructure. Harry’s session also covers policy based automation of tenant on-boarding, application containers, self-service catalogs, application monitoring and trouble-shooting among other things. If you are unable to attend the breakout, Harry also is hosting a panel session on building Data Centers with ACI on June 9, featuring Cisco Subject matter experts Chad, Cesar and Eric and discuss their ACI deployment experiences across industry segments. I also would recommend Craig Huitema’s breakout that brings how businesses can be sped up simplifying Data Center with ACI and Nexus. Craig will discuss the Nexus portfolio and clarify how ACI simplifies these elements resulting in a faster, more flexible and responsive IT that better aligns with the business needs of today’s rapidly shifting environment.
Most of you by now will be raring to make a beeline to the world of solutions as it is where exhibitors and subject matter experts from various partners and customers of cisco throng to gather insights on what’s new and exciting.
This year, we are showcasing a big collection of solution demos spanning multiple architectures including Data Center, IOE, Security etc. It will take me several blogs to cover them all, so I will stick to ACI my focus area.
