NEW! Cisco Announces Highly Scalable Third Generation UCS Networking Fabric

Today Cisco announced an expanded portfolio of third generation UCS Networking products that improve Datacenter scalability, performance and agility with industry leading capabilities. The announcement includes the following new products:

1. A new Fabric Interconnect (Cisco UCS 6296UP) that doubles the switching capacity of the data center fabric to improve workload density (from 960Gbps to 1.92 Tbps), reduces end-to-end latency by 40 percent to improve application performance  and provides flexible unified ports to improve infrastructure agility and transition to a fully converged fabric

2. A new Chassis I/O Module (Cisco UCS 2204XP) that offers enhanced resiliency and utilization with Port Channeling, and an option for 80 Gbps, in addition to 160 Gbps, down to each chassis (from 80Gb to 320Gb to the blade) to handle workload bursts

3. A new modular LOM Virtual Interface Card Cisco UCS VIC 1240.  The VIC 1240, that is designed specifically for the M3 generation of UCS B-series servers. The card offers all the functionality of the Generation-1 Cisco VIC M81KR and augments application performance by quadrupling the bandwidth, up to 80 GB to the blade server when used with the Port Expander Card. It also increases flexibility by doubling the number of virtual interfaces available per card, up to 256 interfaces. The 256 virtual interfaces will also help customer drive greater VM density for VM-FEX deployments. The card is also capable of advanced technologies like VMDirectPath with vMotion for improved I/O and CPU performance in virtualized environment

Several customers have successfully tested and deployed the new UCS networking products. David Rinker, Chief Enterprise Architect, at Sage Software says:

The Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect 6296UP is a perfect improvement to the UCS platform.  With the combination of the unified ports and the ability to expand from the fixed 48 ports up to the entire 96 ports when we need to, it eliminates a lot of the guesswork we have to perform to appropriately size the environment.  We can install it and upgrade/change as needed to adjust to the needs of our business.  The Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect 6296UP also allows us to maximize both bandwidth on any chassis where we need it an ensure that we keep as few UCS domains as possible off of a single interconnect.  Installation of the device into our datacenter is as easy as we have come to expect from UCS.  The UCS IO Module 2204XP and UCS Fabric Interconnect 6296UP are fully compatible with older and newer UCS technology so we don’t have to perform a “rip-and-replace” to integrate either innovation into our existing infrastructure.  A great improvement to a great platform.

The new products complement the existing UCS Networking line (Cisco UCS 6248UP and Cisco UCS 2208XP). The expanded portfolio, comprising of the new and existing products, is expected to continue driving the Cisco UCS momentum into 2012
