Data Center and Cloud

We’re at Cisco Live 2011, Las Vegas and have released two Design Considerations documents around Virtual Workload Mobility over the Data Center Interconnect (DCI).

Here’s a little background..  The DCI system has four main components that leverage existing products and technologies and is modular in design, allowing for DCI system to support new and evolving use cases. For the Virtualized Workload Mobility use case, the solution components are shown below.

The Design Considerations documents go over contraints, concerns, items to consider when developing your system.

After the jump you’ll learn a little more about the solutions components, high-level, with direct links to the Design Considerations documents themselves…

Le’s break down those four components in a little more detail..

LAN Extension: The LAN Extension technology extends the Layer 2 system beyond the single data center and connects 2 or more data centers via a single Layer 2 domain. This use case highlighted two different LAN Extension technologies: (NOTE: you can use either OTV or vPC -- you have a choice and there is also VPLS options, but out of scope for these documents)

Path Optimization: As virtual machines are migrated between data centers, the traffic flow for the client-server transaction may become suboptimal.  Suboptimal traffic flow may lead to application performance degradation.

Workload Mobility: Workload Mobility requires a virtualized infrastructure to support migration of virtual machines.

(Note: The mobility solution was also designed with consideration to live migration between two different clusters)

Stretched Cluster -- A Single ESXi Cluster Stretched Across 100 kilometers

Storage Elasticity: This use case requires synchronous replication with flexibility to integrate intelligent storage solutions.

One of the most important considerations is your storage system, so we evaluated two separate intelligent storage solutions for this go-around.

A key point to recognize is that the overall  solution components are designed to be independent from one another. That is, new technologies and products can replace existing products and technologies within a specified component.

I expect that some new technologies will be available soon and be able to integrate into this solution…stay tuned
