Cisco Unified Computing System—Not Just For Virtualization

I had a good chat with a customer the other day about our Cisco UCS solution—they are very intrigued and are bringing them in-house to evaluate.  As I was wrapping up, someone asked me an interesting question—they see UCS as a great platform for their VMware environment, but what about the rest of their apps—the vast majority of their apps are not virtualized yet.  Great question—luckily, we have an answer for that scenario too—its called…..Cisco UCS.

So, while there has been a great deal of focus on the UCS as the über-platform for server virtualization, the reality is that it is also a great platform for your regular workloads as well.  Cisco UCS Manager allows you to do bare metal provisioning of each server blade so you can still take advantage of Cisco UCS for all your workloads, not just your virtualized ones.  It does not make a difference if you are loading a hypervisor and multiple guests on the blade or a single OS and application.  In either case, you can take advantage of the UCS stateless computing model, the extended memory architecture, killer performance and simplified management, cabling and infrastructure.  And, as you virtualize more and more of your applications, you can do it, in place, on your existing UCS platforms. Nothing could be simpler.

For those of you unfamiliar with the working of UCS Manager, follow these links for some background and to see UCS Manager in action go here and here.

A really interesting green computer technology I found is Userful Multiplier.  It’s where multiple people can use the same computer at the same time each with their own monitor, mouse and keyboard. This saves a lot of electricity and e-waste. A company called Userful recently set a virtualization world record by delivering over 350,000 virtual desktops to schools in Brazil. They have a free 2-user version for home use too. Check it out: userful.com

Hi, Omar.

Can we use UCS 6100 to manage UCS Blade servers, and on the same time, use UCS 6100 as Nexus 5000 to inter-connect to our SAN storage via FC? if no, would Cisco support this feature in the future, and the ETA please? feel free to fire me an e-mail for more details, thanks, Leo.

Leo:

Yes.  Similar to the way may deploy a Cisco Nexus 5000 today, you can use the UCS 6100 to deploy a unified fabric on the server side and standards based Ethernet and FC upstream.  You can find more details here http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10281/solution_overview_c22-522771_ps10276_Product_Solution_Overview.html

Let me know if you have further questions.

Omar
