Real Life Data Center 3.0 Deployments – A University

We’ve been talking about Cisco Data Center 3.0 vision & strategy for a while now. How Cisco Data Center 3.0 provides a granular, multi-phase journey for transforming data center to meet the evolving needs of the business with a strategy that emphasizes investment protection & incremental incorporation of new technologies & infrastructure with the existing ones.

As we take the companies through this journey of implementing Data Center 3.0, I will be sharing some of the real-life experiences of these companies in a series of blog posts.

Here is one, University of Wyoming, leveraging end-to-end Cisco Data Center 3.0 solution. University developed state-of-the-art data center to achieve infrastructure scalability, operational continuity and transport flexibility.

The university’s data center houses critical administrative applications, a massive student portal, and departmental servers. The university’s new data center is designed to accommodate massive growth in scientific and administrative computing, and enable collaboration on research projects at a supercomputer center 50 miles away.

The solution selected by the university provides high port 10 GbE density, high availability, iSCSI SAN & FC SAN connectivity with Cisco Nexus 7000, Catalyst 4948-10GbE switches, Catalyst 3100 blade switches and MDS storage products.

According to Matt Kelley, Network Administrator, University of Wyoming, “The Cisco Nexus 7000 allows in-service upgrades. This means that researchers and students can use university and research center applications any time of day or night.”

The University selected the Cisco Nexus 7000 Switch after also evaluating two other data center switch vendors. “The Cisco Nexus 7000 provided superior scalability and availability,” says Brad Thomas, network specialist, University of Wyoming.  “We were pleasantly surprised that it was also priced competitively.”

At first, the University tried another vendor I/O solution for blade server connectivity which was causing problems. The University then moved to Cisco Blade Switch 3120X which now provides seamless connectivity to blade server applications.
