It’s been said that marketing is telling the truth attractively. My spin on that definition is that “telling the truth is the most effective form of marketing.” That’s exactly how I approach life here in the Marketing organization at Cisco.
I was a customer of Cisco’s before I was an employee. So I know the company from the other side of the proverbial table. I also know from experience that Cisco’s broad portfolio of data center solutions solve real problems. I don’t have to dream up exotic ways to make our solutions enticing, I just tell the truth.
That’s why I really enjoy talking about the Unified Computing System or UCS. I evaluated it as a customer just over two years ago. I wasn’t interested in what it could become; I was interested in what it was. What could it do for me now? What problems could it solve now? As I conducted my evaluation, I was pleasantly surprised that UCS unified compute, network and storage access. It actually made my life easier. Here are some of the problems it conquered for me:
- Port Reduction: The unification of the system provided a platform to reduce the number of network and storage ports I needed to consume. Fewer ports meant fewer devices, which translated into CapEx and OpEx savings.
- Scalability: The ability to scale horizontally was greatly increased by the architecture of the UCS. I could easily add servers without running cables to network and storage switches.
- Management: The UCS Manager provided a single pane of glass to manage the entire domain of UCS servers. Additionally, I could use the XML API to manage the domain as well. Flexibility wins.
It turned out that the UCS was capable of solving real problems out of the gate. UCS was impressive from its debut and has evolved in its ability to solve business problems with each release.
Fast forward 20 months and I’m excited to say that many others are realizing the value of the UCS. Industry analyst IDC just released their quarterly report for blade server market share based on revenue and shows continued UCS momentum. Here are some highlights:
- In the second quarter 2011 Cisco UCS now represents 11.3% of World Wide x86 blade server market an increase of 6.5 points year over year.*
- In the United States, Cisco moved into second place with a 17.0% share of the Q211 x86 blade server market.*
