3 C’s of Cloud Adoption
Feeling frustrated among all this chatter about Cloud? Want to implement a cloud solution quickly for your business, but don’t know where to start? I can help you understand how to maximize your benefits during the process of adopting a cloud solution. It’s as simple as 3 C’s: confine, clover, and cost.
Today, I will focus on the first “C”—Confine.
Before you can determine what cloud strategy you want to implement, you need to narrow down or “confine” the business problem you want to solve with Cloud. Once you have confined the problem, you can begin your roadmap for success with clear goals and expectations.
But how do you confine the problem? I suggest you take a good look at the market forces that are pushing you to consider cloud. Internally, it may be cost efficiency: reducing IT investment or managing staffing costs. Externally, the forces could be government regulations or competitive differentiations that are leading you to consider a cloud solution.
You can use these market force considerations as a basis to determine what apps you need to take to the cloud to improve end-user experiences, maximum returns, and minimum risk. This approach will also help you define what impact Cloud will bring to your company ecosystem—employees, customers, and 3rd parties.
However, many companies today are only considering the migration of some of their collaborative services to the Cloud. They have seen the benefits gained by other companies from migrating, for example, email to the Cloud, and they find it easy to turn over these services to a cloud provider, often picking up some additional functionality along the way.
One of the things I have observed is that many companies take collaboration services to the Cloud first. Is this always the best option? Maybe. But I suggest you try to understand from a broad point of view what is appropriate for your company. Instead of just looking at what other companies have done, it is better to define what set of applications can be moved to the Cloud that will help you solve your confined problem and give you additional leverage and competitive advantage in your industry. It is this critical step that is, the majority of the time, missed when developing a cloud strategy.
Lastly, to “confine” also means taking baby steps in your cloud strategy. Instead of attempting to do everything in one fell swoop, you need to build on your success starting with proof of concept, step by step. So first “confine” your problem, and then move on to the next steps: “clover” and “cost” (coming on week of Aug 6th and Aug 13th, respectively).
