Recruiters, Managers Recognize the Value Military Veterans Bring to the Corporate Workforce

Vernon Bennett is a shining example of Cisco’s initiative to hire military veterans. Vernon spent more than 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard and also has years of experience in the civilian sector: a combination that is desirable to Cisco’s recruiters and hiring managers.

As a military recruiter for Cisco, I work with veterans across the United States, helping them find job opportunities at our company. I typically cater to two types of veterans: those just transitioning out of the military who are a great fit for many entry-level roles, and those who have been out of the military for a while and have developed civilian skills.

A few weeks ago, a flurry of emails crossed my desk. Vernon’s résumé was attached and he was looking for a role with Cisco in our Research Triangle Park, North Carolina office. Recruiters, hiring managers, veteran employees, and members of our Veterans Enablement and Troop Support Employee Resource Group all wanted to contact him – both because he had just the right combination of civilian and military skills and because our veteran employees are always looking for opportunities to support our veterans.

The situation gave me the chance to perfect a process for handling such highly qualified and desirable applicants in the future. At the request of my boss, William Blackstorm, Cisco HR manager and Mike Quinn, vice president of technical support and a military veteran, I reached out to Vernon personally to coordinate everyone’s interest in him. He applied to seven openings; I made sure to screen him for others to see his responses and I coordinated interviews for him.

Judy Ann Frank, a human resources manager in Cisco Customer Solutions, recognized Vernon as an ideal candidate for a role she was seeking to fill. He was hired a week later as a project manager in Advanced Services Customer Advocacy.

Not only did Cisco benefit by hiring a highly qualified veteran, I was able to help Vernon embark on a new career path and streamline my own process for placing more veterans in jobs at Cisco. I have to say, it felt good.

Vernon is one of 150 veterans hired at Cisco in the last 18 months. This weekend, other veterans and transitioning military personnel will have the chance to learn about job opportunities at Cisco. We are participating in two virtual job fairs and an in-person hiring event in Bethesda, Maryland hosted by the 100,000 Jobs Mission. Learn more below.
