When most people think about sustainability at a company like Cisco, they envision solar arrays and smart cities – and we certainly have those! But humming quietly on the roof of every building is a significant energy consumer, the air conditioning. So just as we innovate solutions for the Internet of Everything, we also search for ways to improve facility energy efficiency in many ways that aren’t obvious to building occupants.
Over 2000 innovators came together in San Jose recently to examine ways to ensure that buildings can survive powerful earthquakes.
This was no ordinary trade show. It wasn’t an industry conference filled with engineers and seismologists, policymakers and building managers. Instead, the more than 2000 participants were students, grades 4 through 12, from across Silicon Valley who came together for The Tech Challenge, a signature event of The Tech Museum of Innovation. Cisco has been the event’s presenting sponsor for five years.
The challenge was deceptively simple: design, engineer, and build a multi-story building able to withstand powerful seismic forces. Hundreds of teams spent the last 6 months researching seismic engineering, testing materials, and coming up with strong and flexible designs.
Then, these projects were put to the ultimate test: withstanding the earthquake simulator to see if the building survived intact.
At this time last week, the Cisco Corporate Social Responsibility team was in San Diego, California as part of Cisco Live US 2015. There, we participated in a number of different activities and events, from a Partner Pavilion in the expansive World of Solutions to a keynote featuring a member of the Cisco Networking Academy Dream Team. We highlighted the work of partners like CyberPatriot, shared stories of impact around the globe, and helped students develop the skills necessary for careers in the IT industry.
Throughout the week, we explained how more devices are connecting to the Internet each day, and how these connections will create job opportunities for young men and women around the world. With the help of our partners and their innovative programs, we’re empowering these future global problem solvers with the skills they need to thrive and speed the pace of social change. Yesterday, over 25,000 Cisco customers, employees, and executives helped kick off Cisco Live US 2015 in San Diego, California, attending everything from John Chambers’ final keynote to the World of Solutions in the massive San Diego Convention Center. The venue, which measures over a quarter mile from end to end, features a public, secure wireless network for attendees to access from any room in the building.
Because of this network, they can tweet, post Facebook statuses, and share their favorite pictures on Instagram throughout the week, all without worrying about a faulty Internet connection. But who is keeping that network running, and who helped set it up?
The Cisco Networking Academy Dream Team! As part of the Dream Team, 30 Networking Academy students have been working side-by-side with the Cisco IT team to maintain the event’s massive networks and develop the hands-on skills they’ll need to thrive in the connected economy.
Each year, more than 160,000 students in the United States and Canada enroll in Cisco Networking Academy courses, where they develop IT know-how and valuable problem-solving skills in preparation for jobs in the IT field. Of those thousands of candidates, 10 North American students are selected to participate, and another 20 local students join them to provide additional support.
