Yesterday, over 25,000 Cisco customers, employees, and executives helped kick off Cisco Live US 2015 in San Diego, California, attending everything from John Chambers’ final keynote to the World of Solutions in the massive San Diego Convention Center. The venue, which measures over a quarter mile from end to end, features a public, secure wireless network for attendees to access from any room in the building.
Because of this network, they can tweet, post Facebook statuses, and share their favorite pictures on Instagram throughout the week, all without worrying about a faulty Internet connection. But who is keeping that network running, and who helped set it up?
As part of the Cisco Networking Academy Dream Team, students are building the skills they’ll need to thrive in the connected economy.
The Cisco Networking Academy Dream Team! As part of the Dream Team, 30 Networking Academy students have been working side-by-side with the Cisco IT team to maintain the event’s massive networks and develop the hands-on skills they’ll need to thrive in the connected economy.
Each year, more than 160,000 students in the United States and Canada enroll in Cisco Networking Academy courses, where they develop IT know-how and valuable problem-solving skills in preparation for jobs in the IT field. Of those thousands of candidates, 10 North American students are selected to participate, and another 20 local students join them to provide additional support.

- Student Career Day – Thursday, June 11: Corporate Social Responsibility will connect 600 students with IT professionals for career conversations and hands-on workshops, including a scavenger hunt, a Lego-building activity, and a Maker Faire workshop.
- CSR Partner Pavilion – June 8 to June 11: Six Cisco CSR Partners, from CyberPatriot to Water for People, will demonstrate how they’re working with Cisco to provide global problem solvers with the technology and know-how to create social good around the world.
- Give Back Activation – June 9 to June 10: More than 20,000 Cisco Live attendees will have the opportunity to join the global fight against hunger as part of the Stop Hunger Now activity on June 9 and June 10. Volunteers will spend 30 minutes assembling meal kits which will be delivered to hungry families around the world.
- Cisco Networking Academy Dream Team: As part of the Cisco Networking Academy Dream Team, 30 students will work side-by-side with the Cisco IT team to maintain the event’s massive networks and develop the hands-on skills they’ll need to thrive in the connected economy.

The World is Flat, not a Flatscreen
I can’t deny it any longer. The apps on my mobile devices, and my social network living inside those apps, are influencing my behavior. In the case of disaster relief, at least, this influence is for the better.
While playing Words with Friends, I am asked to “Play to Help Nepal.” While paying my sister back for a Mother’s Day through Venmo, I notice my news feed has been taken over by @Possible (Possible Health).

A few taps on the screen and I watch my money move, along with relief workers, aid, and social awareness.

Remember your first compact disc? Maybe yours was a music album like Billy Joel’s “52nd Street” or Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA.” Or maybe your first compact disc was the CD-ROM, used to download the first application to your brand new computer. The jewel case made your CD look far more valuable than the price you paid. CDs were the future. Audio cassettes were a thing of the past.
Today, if you say the words “compact disc” to anyone under age 20, you get a strange look, and usually hear “What is a Compact Disc?” The introduction of MP3 players in the early 2000s gave consumers easy access to music, allowing them to share and download files to multiple devices with a few simple clicks.
Today, consumers also have easy access to downloadable software, images, and product licenses. They don’t need one more CD to collect dust in their office. CDs are a thing of the past.
