Corporate Social Responsibility

Just a few days ago, Cisco received China’s prestigious “2011 Best Corporate Citizenship Award,” given by 21st Century Business Herald and 21st Century Business Review, two of the country’s major media outlets. The award recognizes Cisco’s corporate social responsibility work in healthcare and education in Sichuan province.

See how Cisco is a good corporate citizen in Sichuan, China

Cisco established the Connecting Sichuan program in 2008 — after a catastrophic earthquake left nearly 5 million residents homeless, killed 70,000 people, destroyed thousands of school buildings, and cut off mobile and land-based communications, including Internet access.

Cisco, its foundation, and its employees donated more than US$2.6 million in direct financial aid for immediate humanitarian relief in Sichuan Province. We also invested over US$50 million more in the long-term transformation of healthcare and education in rural communities through information and communications technology (ICT).

Today, years after the quake, patients still benefit from this technology. Doctors share x-rays with colleagues thousands of miles away, and village nurses can connect to specialists and diagnostic resources at distant urban hospitals. Cisco technologies now facilitate 280,000 outpatient visits per month and enable processing of more than 60 million rural patient medical insurance records.

Likewise, provincial schools have been buoyed by the Connecting Sichuan program and introduction of ICT. Cisco equipped more than 100 educational facilities with Internet access, giving teachers the ability to teach remotely, and connecting both instructors and students to the vast educational resources available online.

We are proud to receive the Best Corporate Citizenship Award in recognition of our work in China. But we are even prouder to have worked with the people of China to change lives for the better — now and for generations to come.
