Sharing Files Should be as Easy as Sharing Dessert

image

If you didn’t know better from experience, you’d think that you just share files the way you share dessert; you ask your brother if he wants half your ice cream sundae. There’s no debate, or pause to read directions – and you definitely don’t have to ask twice.

Sometimes, sharing computer files can seem more difficult than quantum physics. Take a quick look at how you’re supposed to share files in Windows XP, in this article from Microsoft’s Help and Support page:

“Through the Simple File Sharing UI, you can configure both share and NTFS file system permissions at the folder level. These permissions apply to the folder, all the files in that folder, subfolders, and all the files in the subfolders. Files and folders that are created in or copied to a folder inherit the permissions that are defined for their parent folder. This article describes how to configure access to your files, depending on permission levels. Some information that this article contains about these permission levels is not documented in the operating system files or in the Help file…”

And that’s just the article’s introduction!

But that’s not Microsoft’s fault, exactly. It’s always taken technology a long time to become sophisticated enough to live down to our low expectations – and even longer for writers to demystify the process. Which is why Network Magic came along in the first place.

Er, not that we want to live down to anybody’s low expectations. Rather, we set out to make things like file sharing (and printer sharing, and the whole home network setup thing) really simple. Without using acronyms, abbreviations or complicated terms.

Our Network Magic product which is a home networking software tool for setting up and managing your home networking. The concept is about following ultra-simple, easy steps in plain English– so you can immediately share any file with any other computer on your home network, simply by adding that file to your shared folders.

To quote our own marketing blurb, “All of the complicated steps to set up file sharing in Windows are eliminated.”

It’s as simple as that. Um. You gonna finish that ice cream?

Never thought that there could be more to file/print sharing in Windows, than what MS offered.
For me, everything was fine upto Windows XP. But with Vista, things had changed drastically….As an experienced Windows system software developer, I faced issues while trying to share/access files on the network - So I could very well imagine the plight of home users.
Network Magic seems like a great product (Long overdue)(Something that I always dreamed out when the vista error screen started frustrating me). I can look forward to not having to spend most of my phone time with parents back home, trying to explain file sharing and home networking!

does this network magic support file from outside networks or is vpn software still required?

Johanna Fry Sep 4, 2009

Thanks for sharing Jyothiprakash!

We will do our best to provide more information on home networking and how to make it most convenient to manage online content.

David,

That is a good question. Network Magic, home network software, allows you to easily share files between computers on your home network, but it does not have VPN capabilities to access files from your business intranet.

Thanks for reading and please let me know if you have any other questions or a specific topic you would like to see discussed on this blog.

Best,

Johanna

Jut curious, How secure it is? what i feel is because of security concerns, the usability at xp is bit worse.
But if there is a device which helps us to share file with great usability. I would be very glad to welcome this.

just 2 questions… Imagine a network with several computers… some of them with Windows XP Pro SP2, one with Windows Vista and now 3 with Windows 7 Beta… this program can help me to “bypass” the “you might not have enough permission” error between all of them???

If i can’t see the computers in the Local network detected by windows.. am i still able to configure the program??

Microsoft is going to offer Mesh which will hopefully be cool, but in the mean time there are companies like sugarsync that allow you to share and copy content from my laptop to my netbook and even access is from my iphone, but my favorite is Zumodrive as I don’t have to copy everything to have access to everything. Works great with my music and iTunes.

So is Networkmagic a product of Cisco?
Haven’t been succesful to get much information about it, but am surely gonna give it a try. Considering the fact that i own a cyber cafe, i get many customers who don’t even understand the basics of sharing and computing. It becomes extremely difficult when printer sharing is disabled and a customer needs his document to be printed.
Technology surely is making our lives easier day by day smile
