Digital Cribs Stars Share Their Connected Life

Living a connected life means that you can access your online world of music, video, entertainment, and yes, work…on a variety of devices, anywhere. Yes, with mobility, long gone are the days of being chained to a desk to check your email or update your Facebook profile.

The stars of the web series Digital Cribs were selected because they each live an exceptionally connected life and use technology to further what they are most passionate about.

In the video extras highlighted below, electronic dance music DJ Paul van Dyk, TreeHugger.com founder Graham Hill, and Lastminute.com co-founder Martha Lane Fox, share more of their connected life with us, including the freedom a wireless network and efficiency of a mobile phone.

Home Network Supervision is Key, Says Recent YouGov Survey

image
From “Kids and the Internet—what’s a parent to do?

You’re home network allows everyone to share the Internet connection and be online at the same time. If you also have young children, you may be wondering how you can keep them safe through home network controls and software. You want to trust your kids and let them make their own decisions, but when they’re on the home network, it’s more important than ever to watch over your kids and remember that they can get into trouble without even leaving the house.

In a YouGov survey taken in April 2009, only 7% of respondents indicated that they did not have concerns about their child’s online safety, however 92% of all online US adults who completed the survey do not use parental controls on their home network to protect their children from inappropriate Web sites and content. Clearly, parents want to protect their children while they’re online, but many haven’t taken the necessary steps to do so. Compare this to the fact that 74% of all respondents use anti-virus software to protect their computers and data.

So how do protect your children when they’re online and you’re not there to watch over them? You can start by using parental control tools that monitor and control what types of content and Web sites your child can access. These tools often include Internet access controls, where you can specify the times of day that your child can access the Internet. For example, you can block all Internet access every day after 8:00 p.m. There are also tools that block specific Web sites. You can block sites based on content, such as pornography or gambling, or block a specific Web site address.

Digital Cribs Star Graham Hill on Living Green

Digital Cribs videos provide a peek inside technology-stacked homes and offer unique perspectives to technology many of us use everyday. Graham Hill’s Digital Cribs videos in particular, take you through his very green apartment and highlight technology such as the Kill-A-Watt, which monitors the electricity used by the devices in your home and forecasts resulting costs.

Graham is the founder of treehugger.com which provides a breath of information on living an environmentally friendly lifestyle. I’m a big fan of the Green Buying Guide for a little extra help with considering the environment in my purchase decisions, from shoes to computers!

Keeping Kids Safe Online

image

Today’s connected world has gone beyond laptops to include PDAs, games, and other WiFi-enabled devices. As a result, kids can be exposed to a variety of online risks—and many traditional security solutions can sometimes fall short in protecting against these threats. Add to that the fact that statistics show that this demographic is often less concerned about online safety and you can see a recipe for trouble.

Parents today need to be more aware of their kids’ online habits and usage patterns. And that’s exactly the focus of an upcoming Lifetime Television show, The Balancing Act, which will feature Marie Hattar, Cisco vice president of Network Systems and Security Solutions. Above all, Marie suggests keeping communication lines open and helping your kids to understand the potential dangers on the internet so they feel comfortable reporting unusual activity. But there are also products such as Linksys by Cisco’s Home Network Defender, powered by Trend Micro, which can block preset sites and report internet activities to network administrators. Learn more about Cisco’s commitment to keeping kids safe online.
