School District Uses Flipped Learning to Improve Student Learning
Have you heard about Flipped learning? It is transforming the world of education.
At the Denton Independent School district in Texas we wholeheartedly embrace technology education. Why? Because we understand the correlation between technology and student success. With over 26,000 students to serve, Denton ISD looked to “flipped learning” as a solution that would benefit students at all levels. With flipped learning, student’s take-in content before connecting with the teacher in the classroom. Often times, this takes the form of video based material recorded by the teacher and made available to students from any device or location outside of the classroom. In this way, students spend time with their instructors applying learned knowledge instead of acquiring content.
Students are benefiting from this model because not every learner progresses in the same way and most kids work at their own pace. Students can now re-watch the content as many times as they need to, or conversely skip to sections they have already mastered. Additionally, flipped learning allows our teachers to better instruct, increase their interaction time with students, and empower students to excel at all learning levels. We found that at Denton ISD, any fear our teachers had regarding this new technology disappeared once they saw how much students were benefiting from flipped learning and experienced how easy the technology is to use. For many instructors, the Flipped Learning solution also allows them to interact with their colleagues in new ways by giving students the opportunity to listen to lessons from other instructors… in other words, students can follow the teacher who best suits their learning preferences.
As early adopters of flipped learning, we want to share with other communities more about the benefits of this powerful instructional approach at South by South West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas March 2014.
