So here I am traveling in beautiful Ireland – yes, where Cisco develops the most innovative unified communications products on the planet – and enjoying high quality voice over Wi-Fi.
This is a new functionality making its way into smartphones. Cisco released support for it on Nokia E70 series last fall, and it will be available soon on the Apple’s iPhone. Many of us can’t wait for this to be available on RIM’s BlackBerry, not to mention Android or Windows Mobile.
The concept is very simple: your preferred smartphone morphs into your office phone when you’re on the road. Dial internal abbreviated numbers, look up your enterprise directory, make, transfer, and conference calls, all via your Cisco Unified Communications system. Even better, access your enterprise voicemail, listen to them, call back and more, all from the comfort of your beloved device.
All you have to do is find a Wi-Fi access point and connect (with appropriate permissions); the rest is as simple as launching an application.
In these frugal days, it is great not to have to pay roaming charges and avoid an embarrassing appearance on the top spenders list that your boss’ boss scans very thoroughly, wouldn’t you agree?
