PostPath Acquisition and the Cisco Collaboration Platform

Post by Doug Dennerline, SVP, Collaboration Software Group

Communications, globalisation and automation have flattened the world and transformed the competitive landscape. The traditional competitive advantages of size and scale have been replaced by speed and flexibility. In this new world, effective, adaptive collaboration is critical to achieving sustainable competitive advantage.

Today’s acquisition of PostPath is part of our commitment to create a comprehensive cloud-based collaboration platform. By offering an on-demand version of the PostPath solution, we can provide flexible, cost-effective email and calendaring integrated with our collaboration portfolio of Cisco Unified Communications, WebEx and Business Video.

PostPath’s Linux-based email, calendaring and collaboration solution is highly secure and scalable, and incorporates an innovative Web 2.0 architecture to meet the requirements of enterprise customers and small businesses. It’s interoperable with many different email solutions, offers an AJAX web client and is compatible with a broad range of mobile devices.

We’re excited to welcome the PostPath team to Cisco and look forward to working together.

For more information, I encourage you to listen to this podcast from Cisco’s Alex Hadden-Boyd, www.cisco.com/go/arpodcasts

Will Cisco IT be moving all your internal users over do PostPath?

Rachael Sep 7, 2008

My PA is a unique Global Virtual PA service based on the WebEx application. As a supporter of Cisco Technologies and Methodologies we welcome the Postpath acquisition to leverage our interoperablity with out varied clients existing solutions. Can’t wait!!

CustomerY Oct 9, 2008

Is PostPath available as a standalone product from Cisco?  It seemed from the PostPath website that it would not be available without some sort of “future” bundled option.

CustomerZ Oct 21, 2008

I had planned to try Postpath out in the near future. While I think it will be great when integrated with Cisco’s other offerings, I hope you can find a way to make it available again, standalone, in the short term.

Kris Jan 7, 2009

Any chance of buying PostPath as a alternative to Exchange any longer?

CustomerV Jan 14, 2009

We evaluated Postpath in 2008 and intended to purchase it in 2009 to replace our mail server. We are still interested in Postpath as a standalone, but now we are evaluating MS-Exchange since Postpath is only being released as a “service”.

MBA Colleges Jan 18, 2009

It’s going to get interesting as the battle brews between Cisco and Microsoft. Cisco just hit a sensitive ‘Exchange nerve’ at Microsoft. No love lost between these two is an understatement.

Kevin Feb 18, 2009

It’s a shame. PostPath looked like the real Exchange alternative. We like others here had it on the list of products to evaluate for purchase in 2009.  Of all the Exchange “knock offs” it looked like the most promising and best alternative.  Now however, it looks like it’s another product that will be sucked into come convoluted strategy that will make it more painful and expensive than the product I was trying to avoid. I can only say Cisco blew it by killing this product instead of offering it as a standalone.  It certainly still could have offered a hosted solution as well but this seems to be another case where Cisco does not care what the customer wants .. only what it’s own vision is. Good luck with that.

James Robb Feb 18, 2009

What is happening with the PostPath program?  Has it gone into hiding, no information since Aug 2008

Ferdinando Simonetti Feb 23, 2009

Where’s Postpath? A true Exchange alternative… now hidden behind Cisco’s web pages.
Is this a sort of ‘peace gift’ to Microsoft?

rr Mar 7, 2009

Where is postpath?

George Mar 8, 2009

Well well…oldest trick in the book. Cisco is going the route of Novell in battling with Microsoft for the Exchange market instead of simply offering it as a viable alternative for Linux server based networks. I can easily see the threat. Linux servers, PostPath and Apache as the core of a business network and Ubuntu desktops with an Outlook compatible client means NO PROFIT on most of it (for Cisco) except perhaps the initial purchase. Novell isnt doing too well these days and Groupwise was Novell’s PostPath analogy. Not good for Cisco in the long run. Open Source geeks will write one and give it away soon enough.

Doug Dennerline Mar 10, 2009

Yes, just as we believe our large customers will do, Cisco will move user in logical groups overtime to the Cisco Webex Mail i.e. PostPath.

Glass Apr 12, 2009

Over the past two years, Cisco has focused on the collaboration market, with CEO John Chambers touting it as the next wave of innovation in the technology arena.

A major piece of that effort has been Cisco’s $3.2 billion acquisition of WebEx last year. PostPath’s technology will be used to enhance the current e-mail and calendaring capabilities of the WebEx Connect collaboration platform.

Jim Apr 30, 2009

Goodbye Postpath. Absorbed. Sunk without trace.

Rishikesh Jul 3, 2009

Postpath should help in the cloud-based collaboration platform. This is a good move from Cisco.

What is the latest with PostPath? I’ve been in the web development industry for years now and it has all the attributes of a highly successful business application. AJAX is nothing new these days but it’s the one thing that clients always love to have. I’ll be doing some research into WebEx. I’m sure that kind of investment was done with great care.
