Collaboration

In the first part of this series I introduced the people in our new “at-a-glance” graphic (see end of this blog where I’ve embedded it) and looked at their diverse roles and the challenges that posed to IT. In this wrap-up blog, I focus on Bijad, the VP of IT, his understanding of the challenges and his response.

Bijad is the man in the middle of the evolution to a post-PC world. As the range of available collaboration technologies has continued to broaden, the focus for IT has begun to swing from delivering individual best-in-class applications to an interest in an integrated collaboration experience that delivers consistent functionality across multiple devices. However, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. From the C-level suites, he is accountable for enabling this cost-effectively while providing a combination of scale, security, and accessibility through a variety of devices and operating systems. From his customers like Doug, Lee, Sarah, and Ben who you met in my previous blog, he’s hearing increasing demands for a rich, personalized, consistent user experience that lets each of them work and collaborate their way — where, when and how they want — without limits. They want tools to help them stay more connected with their peers and other organizations.

Bijad knows that this will require more flexibility and simplicity to preserve a consistent experience and that an open, interoperable architecture is key to success. Even more important, he knows that people, not technology, are the prime source of his company’s competitive differentiation. So he’s listening carefully, and thinking in terms of roles rather than devices.

To support Doug, the VP of sales, and people in similar highly-mobile, outward-oriented roles, Bijad is looking to the cloud and the deployment flexibility it offers, both internally and externally, in addition to greater agility and lower CapEx. The fact that Cisco’s rich collaboration portfolio —  including Cisco Unified Communications, TelePresence, Contact Center, WebEx, and Jabber —  offers a choice of public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud deployment options makes it especially attractive to him. He can choose the deployment option that best meets the varying business needs and budget realities he sees across his company’s business while preserving a consistent end-user experience.

From Lee, the engineering designer who works from her home office, Bijad hears that having the same experience on any of her devices is important. But its even more important to keep in touch with all the people she works with around the world, inside and outside the company. For employees like her, Bijad thinks the ability to escalate to a video, voice, IM, or web conferencing session directly from WebEx Social will be ideal.

Sarah, the field marketing manager, has given Bijad more reasons to make sure his architecture can support video to and from every end-point. Like the sales crew, Sarah depends on the power of “in-person” to build trust, enhance collaboration, and maintain creative momentum — and to keep her in touch with her family. Bijad knows that Cisco enables video everywhere, on any device, from smartphones and IP phones to tablets, laptops, and PCs, to life-size Cisco TelePresence meeting rooms.

Finally, Bijad understands that Ben the intern is the kind of employee in which  BYOD brings out the best. Everything IT is doing for the other roles will help Ben find his place, with a special boost from Cisco Jabber, which will let Ben quickly and easily find people, see if and how they are available, and collaborate using his preferred method, including instant messaging (IM), voice, video, voice messaging, desktop sharing, and conferencing.

For all these roles, and many others, Bijad looks to Cisco for collaboration solutions that help him extend his IT investments, make the most of his budget, and ensure business relevancy for IT as he takes his infrastructure into the post-PC era.
