Real Players in WLAN

Interesting move by HP to acquire Colubris.  This gives ProCurve, HPs networking division, their .11n and vertical angle ...so does this mean ProCurve will become a “Real” player in WLAN?

HP ProCurve has done a terrible job integrating HP technology let alone other companies’ technology. It hasn’t been able to leverage OpenView as an example. Whether it can challenge Cisco will depend on just how well and how quickly it can integrate Colubris’ products and really make wireline and wireless seamless. Having met both groups, I see some culture clash coming although HP stock might soften the strain.

It’s an interesting development, indeed, but one that I think nets HP some good technology and exposes what Colubris has been working on to a much larger audience.

My complete thoughts are here: http://blogs.forrester.com/it_infrastructure/2008/08/here-we-go-agai.html

ProCurve = quiet, against-the-odds success for HP. They want to stay relevant, profitable, but not rock boat (ie challenge Cisco).

Hi Niki,

You can read Tracy’s take here:

In general we are positive on this acquisition. Given Procurve’s success in the access layer, they should play a larger role in the WLAN market. This acquisition gives them the people and technology to do that.
