Analyze This

Cisco recently hosted 25+ analysts from Forrester Research for our annual Forrester /Cisco Day.  This event, was the first of its kind, as we used a completely new business model to conduct it; instead of having the analysts fly from Boston to San Jose, we used TelePresence and WebEx, to engage both parties in meaningful dialogue with many of Cisco’s executives.
Not only was the dialogue great, but the medium by which it was delivered (TelePresence), really hit the mark.  According to George Colony, Forrester’s CEO,
“Despite my reservations, I think that this technology is a winner.”

What are your thoughts on using this technology (TelePresence) as a replacement to face to face analyst meetings?

Great picture… except you somehow cut me out! wink

In all seriousness, this was one of the best, most intimate sessions we’ve had with Cisco. But it never ceases to amaze me that TelePresence really hits you when you go home and catch yourself thinking “Wow, I forgot that wasn’t in person.”

I can make vid calls from my mobile phone, so this sounds very good to me as a group meeting venue.  However, I’m not aware of any AR professionals looking to reduce their in-person, F2F time with analysts.

Your anecdote is couched in a situation few AR professionals will ever experience.  At best, only a few hundred ICT companies boast the cash and the clout to hold court privately and simultaneously with 25+ Forrester analysts for an hour, let alone a day.

I would think that for the many AR professionals not in Cisco’s enviable position, there is no viable substitute for F2F meetings—because F2F time is already too rare.

Instead, TelePresence sounds like a great replacement for audio-only conference calls—because those happen too often.

Telepresence is the future - the near future. How many of us just hate to get on planes today?

But Telepresence (capital “T”, in the Cisco sense) is, um, capital-intensive. What’s needed is to extend Webex so it’s more Telepresence-like, and, of course, to link the two. I’m looking forward to using “personal Telepresence” more often, from my office and even my mobile device. Time on airplanes is increasingly counter-productive, even if they do have Wi-Fi.

Thx. Craig.
