Little Green Steps

No, I don’t mean the tracks left by those proverbial little green men, I mean the simple steps you can take -- today -- to help reduce your company’s environmental impact.Mike Gunderloy over at Web Worker Daily wrote a post Monday posing the question “How Green is Your Web Work?” He pointed out a number of useful tips for working greener, including reducing stand-by power use and using fewer gadgets (which he insightfully adds is contrary the nature of many web workers). He also pointed us to Geoff Livingston’s Washington Post article, which makes a very important, if cliché, observation: Actions speak louder than words. If you’ve been watching any sort of media recently, you know that many companies want to be perceived as green. Some promote their use of renewable energy sources, some how their manufacturing is greener, and some how they sell recyclable products. But the reality for many companies is that making a meaningful contribution to carbon emissions reduction -- the biggest contributor to global warming -- is really hard. A bit of electricity saved here, a truck converted to clean diesel there -- every bit helps, but making those steps large enough to have a real impact is not only hard, but expensive. If you work for a large company (as I do), your company probably has a formal green initiative and you’re probably being asked to take some steps. If you work for a small company, you might want to become greener, but not think there’s much you can -- or more importantly afford to -- do.So, how can you make it easier (and cheaper!)?Take a little green step -- right now -- and save money, reduce your carbon footprint and help your company do a better job in its green initiatives. You don’t have to be as much of a web worker as I suspect the folks over at Web Worker Daily are, but try holding a meeting every now and then on the web (we’d prefer you did it with WebEx, of course!). Start by trying one meeting this month instead of traveling.Did you know, for example, that one air round-trip between San Francisco and New York creates about the same amount of carbon emissions as the average American home’s electricity use for four and one-half months? That’s a pretty significant reduction (nearly one ton of carbon emissions according to the Carbon Fund’s carbon calculator). So try it -- just one meeting in the next month. You might find that you actually like not standing in security lines at the airport, and you might like getting home in time for dinner. You’ll probably also like the airfare, hotel and other expenses you save by not going when you don’t really need to. So open up your WebEx meeting, sit back, relax and take a deep breath -- the air you’ll be breathing will be just a drop cleaner thanks to your little green step.
