One of the most daunting tasks a Data Center manager can face is a large scale hardware relocation.  While today’s technology often allows you to avoid physical moves – you bring new hardware online at your destination, migrate applications there and then decommission the old gear – sometimes you still have to roll up your sleeves and do some heavy lifting.

The scary part, of course, is that your existing hardware has physical and logical dependencies to account for, plus there’s the risk that when you uproot and relocate a device it won’t come back online without incident.  The more hardware involved, the more complex the move.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to streamline a Data Center relocation.  Here are several planning tips for mitigating risks, reducing downtime and making the move successful.

Come back on Friday for part two, which addresses moving day!

  1. Thanks for the valuable video guide. According to my perception relocating Data Center is a challenge. Even if we succeed in migrating old apps, installing hardware at new place the decommissioning tests our skills. We have to monitor the new setup for a couple of months so that quality levels of service remain intact.

  2. Let me start by saying that that is a very useful guide (for me at least).
My oppion is that if you have skills and give a lot of hard work you will finally have a succesful Data Center Move.

  3. Usman and Marius, thank you both for your comments. Data Centers are (obviously) complex environments that contain a lot of interconnected parts. With the proper planning and execution, though, you can minimize the disruption from a major relocation.

Be sure to come back Friday for my next post, which covers moving-day strategies. Thanks!
