More on Cisco Internal WAAS Implementation
In this short follow-on to my last blog post, I wanted to provide a little more detail on Cisco’s strategy, design and results for deploying WAN optimization as part of our Data Center/Virtualization and next generation remote office IT strategy.
At Cisco, we take an architectural approach to IT in solving business problems. This architectural approach has enabled us to address the opportunities and challenges provided by our broad corporate business mandates such as Globalization, Collaboration, Connected Real Estate and Service Management.
To that end, one point we want to clarify to our followers is the total business savings forecasted across different IT cost centers. In my previous post, I shared that Cisco expects to save $850K over three years. That savings is *specifically* from hardware costs related to branch-based file servers and storage. A much larger % of our total “hard cost” savings will come from reduced bandwidth usage and expenses, as well as minimizing needed upgrades and other hardware costs at remote sites. That figure, which I should have added to my initial posting, and which we’ll have in the case study update, is expected to be greater than $35M over 3 years.
Additionally, our expected “soft cost” savings from increased remote office worker productivity gains is conservatively expected to be greater than $50M over 3 years, due to faster application performance and the resulting productivity improvement for many thousands of employees.
Another important detail to note is that our WAAS deployment has followed Cisco’s overall Data Center/Virtualization and next generation remote office architectures and deployment strategy, and as a result our WAAS deployment was expanded only after a significant Cisco data center redesign was complete, in order to fully leverage this consolidation project. As part of this architecture, WAAS has been deployed to date in 200+ remote sites and 4 data centers, with plans to continue deployment for a total of 300+ remote sites and 8-10 data centers in the next few quarters.
Note that many of the smaller Cisco offices have WAAS deployed within Cisco Integrated Services Routers (ISR), as WAAS integrates seamlessly into the network and the ISR capabilities offered such as integrated security and wireless LAN — resulting in increased efficiencies and improved capabilities.
