I am thrilled to blog today about the deployment of Cisco’s own unique collaboration solution across our enterprise to 110,000 employees and contractors worldwide!
This is the culmination of a multi-year project which started as a business process and IT initiative, and evolved as a business unit endeavor after our CEO John Chambers said: “product-ize it.” So, I’m grateful to my colleagues in the business unit – namely Murali Sitaram, vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Collaboration Platform – for taking ownership of the product and improving upon it. Congratulations, too, to my team in Communication and Collaboration IT, and to the Collaboration Business Technologies team whose vision, innovation, long hours, perseverance and creativity made it happen.
If you’ve been following my blog, you know that Cisco has a collaboration solution which we call the “integrated workforce experience” or IWE. Originally powered in alpha version by Liferay, we have now deployed IWE powered by Cisco Quad, our own enterprise social software.
What is IWE exactly? It is the combination of connecting the right people, resources and content; communicating more effectively and efficiently; collaborating internally and externally; and learning from all. Our goal is to drive productivity, growth and innovation.
There are four elements of IWE necessary to create a personalized, relevant workspace. This includes:
1- Cisco video communication and collaboration tools, including Cius (coming soon), Unified Communications, Flip video, WebEx conferencing and enterprise video capabilities like Show and Share.
2- Enterprise social software – powered by Cisco Quad and including collaboration platforms like blogs, wikis, forums, WebEx Connect instant messaging, and communities.
3- Personalization and relevancy – adding functions like search, content, workforce data, identity management, policy management and tagging to your personalized homepage.
4- Applications and services – these include the Cisco employee directory, HR systems, CRM / ERP, business intelligence, and workforce services (My expenses, MyBenefits, My Approvals and our recent favorite –My Paid Time Off).
When we deployed IWE powered by Cisco Quad we also deployed 74 custom portlets – such as Salesforce.com, HRMS, IT Support Central, Executive Metrics, Expense Management and Resources, and our new Paid Time Off portlet. And we have integrated it with Cisco Unified Communications, WebEx Conferencing, enterprise content management, enterprise search, enterprise calendaring and will soon integrate with WebEx instant messaging.
All users now can customize their My View pages with a variety of features and tools, including blogs, posts, document uploads and more. And importantly, IWE powered by Cisco Quad is running on our UCS platform from Cisco’s Richardson, Texas data center.
Why are we doing this? Because collaboration will transform how we work – effectively using social networking capabilities (chat, video, tagging, blogging) and incorporating them into our transactional systems and overall workflow to make us more efficient, effective, and speed our growth and innovation.
We deployed on November 19 and the reaction has been positive. We’re already seeing a great deal of traction and excitement – it’s gratifying to know that we are reducing the pain that so often accompanies our workforce services. Interestingly, we’re seeing the highest adoption rate so far by employees in our Emerging Markets and European geographies, followed by the U.S. and Canada.
IWE powered by Cisco Quad is a work in progress – by no means are we done. This is our first release and it will continue to evolve. But it’s an exciting start! We aim to surprise and delight our users, delivering a better user experience, driving productivity, and enabling our workforce to get work done faster and smarter!
Today, we’re also announcing a major customer – Duke University – and its deployment of Cisco Quad to improve its collaboration efforts among faculty, students, administration and alumni. No matter what the sector, collaboration is pervasive.
