Collaboration is Hot … New Apps for the Enterprise
Application software or what we more commonly refer to as apps – computer software designed to help users perform specific tasks – continues to explode.
As one proof point, Apple, the largest purveyor of apps via its App Store, announced at its Worldwide Developer conference earlier this month that its customers have downloaded more than 30 billion apps. Apple’s App Store now offers more than 650,000 apps, including 225,000 for the iPad.
And this is just in the consumer space! We are also seeing significant development of productivity services and apps in the enterprise. At Cisco, we’ve introduced more than 100 apps and services (see my previous blog on this topic), dramatically simplifying business processes for our employees. Internally, we call these our productivity apps. Employees can access the apps directly from our collaboration platform, formerly known as Cisco Quad – now rebranded as WebEx Social. We’re also moving apps onto mobile devices, which for many employees, particularly those in sales and who travel frequently, is an enormous time saver. Mobile apps are available from the Cisco App Center.
I am absolutely thrilled with the progress we’re making in developing these productivity apps for work. Many, many new apps are in the pipeline and there is clear commitment to continue to make more applications available for our Cisco workforce.
Here are some of the apps that are new or will be enhanced in the first half of July:
My Cases – Allows users to view their open and closed IT support cases, review case details and update case notes, all through a single application.
My Paid Time Off (PTO) – One of our most popular apps, My PTO will expand to seven additional countries (Argentina, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland). This is our first entry into Latin America with My PTO.
Cisco Management Metrics Center (CMMC) – This has been enhanced to offer people managers the capability to directly monitor and track relevant program metrics, such as performance and development progress and PTO requests related to Cisco’s year-end shutdown.
My Timecards– Provides employees with a simple way to view, modify and submit their timecards. Employee PTO balances are also displayed in the application for easy reference.
And let’s not forget mobile apps! Coming in July, they include:
My Approvals is now offered for iPhones, allowing employees to view and manage all of their approval notifications in a single view. My Approvals for the iPad and Android will be available in July.
My Paid Time Off for mobile will also expand to seven countries – Argentina, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland.
My Expenses for mobile offers employees with a simplified interface for preparing their expense reports and an at-a-glance summary of expense report status. It includes the ability to scan and attach receipts to expense reports – a big time saver!
In addition, here is a preview of even more apps that are scheduled for introduction over the next year:
Notifications and Announcements – This will be a consolidated view for employees to receive reminders and notices for cyclical and event driven items.
My Health and Wellness – This offers an employee view of available health and wellness related programs as well as convenience services available to our workforce.
Cisco Maps – Based on an employee’s location, this app will let you view a Cisco building floorplan, check-in/out of a workspace as well as book a conference room. Also integrated will be the capability to click-to-call, click-to-mail, click-to-WebEx and click-to-chat.
Click-to-Chat Support – This new app will enable employees to request click-to-chat support from the relevant Cisco help desk.
My Stock – Employees will be able to view their Cisco equity details, manage their Employee Stock Performance Plan enrollment and select a broker with this app.
HRIQ for Employees – This app will enable direct employee access to information commonly supplied by the Human Resources Connection.
My Travel – This is a new app for viewing past, current and future travel.
