Collaboration is Hot … A Report from the Gartner Symposium

It’s fun to be back at my old stomping grounds – Orlando and Walt Disney World where I worked for 15 years, and I’m pleased to report that everything here still looks amazing!  I hope to run into some of my former colleagues – maybe even Mickey!

I’m here in Orlando for the Gartner Symposium, the industry’s largest annual gathering of more than 8,000 IT professionals and analysts as well as 200 exhibitors. I presented Cisco’s collaboration story in a one-hour session before more than 350 attendees. I am so pleased to have received a great response from the audience – many of whom are grappling with their own collaboration issues such as breaking down silos in their organizations and simplifying workforce applications. It is always gratifying to resonate with your audience!

My observations of the event are that there is amazing energy and buzz – something I haven’t felt in while. As I reflect on this fact, I believe it is because there is so much change taking place in the IT industry with collaboration, video, mobility, cloud, and data center virtualization.

Nothing is “status quo” – and these tremendous industry changes give us, as IT professionals, a chance to learn about what’s new in technology and software, what business problems they are attempting to solve, and ultimately learn what other companies are doing. And perhaps, even more importantly, find out what they are not doing.

I had the opportunity to join several senior Gartner analysts for dinner who shared this energy around the technologies that we at Cisco are currently deploying – including collaboration, video and our internal BYOD strategy across all devices.

I also had a great breakfast with a major customer who is starting to rollout his company’s mobility strategy. Like Cisco, they have developed a mobile strategy that offers a better, more compelling user experience AND significant cost savings. They also have an added challenge of being recently acquired so have lots of legacy systems to integrate.  An added benefit is they are using the mobility strategy to rally the new organization and really drive a cohesive culture.

My next stop: CIO Summit in Phoenix, Arizona where we’ll be hosting over 100 top CIOs and will garner key insights from this prestigious group.  Stay tuned for more on this topic.

Happy Collaborating!
