Cisco Interaction Network

Channel Insider just released some interesting info ranking what vendor certifications held the most value with end-users. I want to share a bit of the list and get your opinion. We are shooting content for one of our next shows while at CiscoLive! next week and one of the primary questions we are diving into is which ones ‘within Cisco’ are the most valuable. Who ranked the highest?Channel Insider had their survey showing the bottom 5 (out of 7) being VMware, Dell, HP, Oracle and IBM. The top two were Cisco and Microsoft. The key element here is ‘value to the end user’ which I would expand in saying, ‘value to someone that want to hire you and how much they would pay you…’ I have only been security certified as a CISSP and GSEC -- both of which are good but very general certs…they would rank low on the pay scale criteria. Vendor specific certs that are constantly updated and kept rigorous, from vendors that are commonly found in most Enterprises would of course be more valuable. From Cisco’s point of view, I think the value of having a large pool of certifiably talented engineers is a good thing competitively as that obviously means that our customers have options for in-house hiring and evaluating our partner community. What do you think are the most valuable certifications these days within Cisco? The CCNA now has multiple specialties, the test has hands on configuration portions to it that did not exist years ago…security, wireless, route/switch are the common pathways but Data Center knowledge, video specific skill sets and others are going to become important I would think. What do you think? (have you participated in the learning @ cisco community? It’s quite good…)We just got a note from Terry Slattery who is credited with being the first non-Cisco engineer to pass the CCIE. I think he has lapsed on a re-cert currently but I can’t fault someone for that since it sounds like his consulting business and company remain busy -- it can happen.
