Welcome to the shownotes for Vblock: Accelerating the Journey to Private Cloud. This show will air with live Q&A on March 4 but is available for replay!
The vBlock is a pre-architected and pre-qualified environment for virtualization at scale: storage, fabric, compute, hypervisor, management and security. The VCE (Virtual Computing Environment) coalition, (or Vmware/Cisco/EMC) some might point out is being heralded as the latest ‘accelerator’ to Private Clouds. If you are looking to get a more hands-on look at what can be done – this is the right place.
There is a tendency to write this off as a marketing announcement that has no meat behind it…but then it would not be a TechWiseTV subject now would it? Our objective for this show is take the Unified Computing knowledge that is already well spoken for on previous episodes and spend some time mixing in the reality of what is in this for you, the customer. Multi-company teams are moving fast on this already and lucky for us, the EMC labs that contain all the technology and testing are just around the corner. We have a lot of questions for this one and we are ready to get our hands dirty.
Segment 1: Defining the Vblock
Steve Phillips, Uber DC Host for TechWiseTV
Chuck Hollis and the first announcement of the VCE coalition. Great links to dissenting opinions here as well. Nice job and good read.
Segment 2: Virtual Computing Environment In Action
Hari Kannan is an engineer at the EMC Santa Clara Innovation Center, he stopped by to give us the hands on demo for working with the Virtual Computing Environment. This is a well spent 14 minutes giving us all a very direct, hands-on look at exactly what you can expect when operating in a Vblock environment.
Segment 3: Virtualization Security
Jimmy Ray addressed much of the inherent security elements present within a Vblock but felt it was important to show the expansive options available for not simply expanding the possibilities but actually doing so in an environment that was specifically built to do so.
We invited special guest, Nirav Mehta from RSA to talk about some of the unique things they were doing in this area with RSA.

Welcome to the next generation of virtualization
Implementing a VMware hosted virtual desktop infrastructure transforms your organization’s IT platform into a more valuable strategic asset – that must be managed and secured to capitalize on its full capabilities.
The RSA SecurBook for VMware View solution provides detailed guidance for deploying and administering key security controls in hosted virtual desktop environments. Specifically, the RSA SecurBook solution details how businesses may integrate RSA® Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Endpoint, RSA enVision® technology, RSA SecurID® authentication and EMC Ionix Server Configuration Manager within a VMware View environment.
Segment 4: Ionix Unified Infrastructure Manager
Guest: Bob Quillin, EMC Senior Director of Product Management
Cisco Introduces New Service Provider Operations Track, CCIE Written Exam Topics Now Available
- Designed specifically for Cisco service provider customers, partners and Cisco networking engineers, the new Cisco SP Operations track is focused on developing the capabilities to operate complex service provider Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) infrastructures.
- The Cisco CCIE® SP Operations certification assesses and validates core IP NGN service provider network operations expertise, including the skills required of an expert (Tier III or Tier IV support) operations engineer to troubleshoot and maintain complex service provider IP NGN core (PE-PE and PE-CE) network infrastructures in both Cisco IOS® and Cisco IOS XR operating environments.
- The exam questions for the written portion of the CCIE SP operations certification can now be downloaded off the Cisco Learning Network. The written exam for the CCIE SP operations certification will be made available in April of 2010.
