Routing and Switching Newsletter for December

Great collection of news and announcements we all need for Cisco Routing and Switching.  Down below the fold here you will find the compilation of stuff you get with a subscription to their newsletter if you don’t already get it.

Just to make sure we are all speaking the same language – For those of you keeping track of Cisco’s marketing terminology, the technology formerly (but still really…) known as Routing, Switching, Security and Mobility are now re-organized within Cisco as our Borderless Networks.   We have been doing TechWiseTV shows on these topics for years of course…but we have adapted of course and done a number of GREAT ‘borderless’ shows as well.  In fact…

Coming Up: Non-Stop Networking for the Always on Business, will air live on December 17.  This show features an inside out look to engineering resilience:

  • Core Layer: Virtual Switching on the Cisco Catalyst 6500
  • Distribution Layer: Nonstop Processing with the Cisco Catalyst
  • Access Layer: Self-Healing Wireless
  • Branch Layer: Dynamic Multipoint VPN
  • Don’t miss the other Borderless Shows available to watch right now!

Working Smart in a Borderless World

As our technology options grow faster than our ability to integrate them into the processes we use to get things done, we often worry about risks…or at least we should!  In this latest edition of ‘FutureProof’ Jennifer Geisler invited Cisco’s Brett Galloway, SVP in the Wireless, Security and Routing Group to share his unique perspective on the reality being effective in our ‘Borderless’ world.

(you can subscribe to this and all of our podcasts by either hooking up with our YouTube channel or using an iTunes feed).

Brett has a very interesting background.

    Wireless, Mobility and Borderless

License to Work…24 Hours a Day.  Now, I am an admitted work-aholic but I think people often mis-apply this assertion: Thanks to VPN, mobile phones, wireless mobility, etc, we can now work ALL the time and due to this nobody is getting any rest. Really?  I do have some STRONG opinions on managing expectations and I think this is key.  It really all stems from us taking personal responsibility for our work habits.   Watch this interview Jennifer Geisler did with our own Ray Smet’s and then scroll down for ‘Robb’s 3 Tips for Managing Expectations’

Ray Smet’s is Vice President and General Manager within Cisco’s Wireless Networking Business Unit and he some unique perspectives he brings to Cisco and the Borderless Networking movement. His background from Packateer, Motorola, Network General and a few other well respected technology companies is most welcomed within our team.  Jennifer Geisler wanted to dig into his opinions on how much of what we are doing fits together.

    ShowNotes: Unified Fabric

Welcome to the shownotes for Episode 54!  Our entire focus for this show is to explore the concepts and the realities of a ‘Unified Fabric’.  If you have not registered for the show yet or would like to see the video on demand, which will be available starting 12/4/09, you can go here.

Here is the official problem statement:

Data centers are rapidly reaching a tipping point. The trend to server virtualization, combined with massive data growth, bandwidth demands, and other factors, is creating enormous management, power, cooling, and cost inefficiencies that cannot be sustained, especially in the current economic environment.

Can unified fabric provide a realistic solution? Is it ready for prime time? Join us as we expose the truth about this new data transport technology and show you the tangible benefits you can expect from its implementation. Discover how you can migrate to unified fabric incrementally, preserving the value of your existing data center investments.

On to the specific myths we felt needed to be addressed and the links to more information!

    The New Collaboration Experience

With Cisco launching over 70 new (and very interesting) products under the ever growing collaboration portfolio, it can be difficult to narrow them down and digest.  In our latest ‘FutureProof’ podcast series, Tina Shakour brings in Lynn Lucas, Cisco’s Senior Director of Collaboration Solutions, to sort it all out.
