Cius: The Inside Story

November 18, 2011 at 8:31 am PST

I have to be honest and tell you that we did not approach this particular show with an attitude of ‘Yeah!  CIsco has a tablet.’  But I am still being honest when I say…that all changed.  This is that story.

TechWiseTV and the Post-PC Experience

November 17, 2011 at 1:21 pm PST

One of the reasons I personally love our collaboration technologies is that I am a productivity nerd. I am a zero-inbox follower of David Allen’s GTD methodology that loves nothing more than tinkering with my ‘perspectives’ in Omni-Focus. It is a great time to be at Cisco and I am blessed to have this TechWiseTV show that affords me access to the best engineering minds and the latest technologies.

Universal Power over Ethernet

UPOE, or Universal Power over Ethernet, is the latest innovation from Cisco with broad, positive implications for many enterprise operations. We are not new at this. Cisco has been pushing the standards since 2000 for the incorporation of electrical power running on the same cable as data.

UPOE is a big milestone as we can now consolidate 60 watts on a single CAT5E cable.   The flexibility that this enables cannot be overstated. Multiple third party vendors are jumping into the ecosystem here as dynamic environments using Virtual Desktops with integrated monitors, IP Turret systems for trading floors, not to mention building management, physical security and host of networking devices such as AP’s and compact switches that are often installed in very obscure locations.

The Catalyst 4500E is the initial beneficiary of this industry first for Cisco and this episode of TechWiseTV covers not just the use case and deployment examples as we go hands on with the big switch, but also a unique deep dive into understanding just how this works. A full appreciation for the engineering talent behind this innovation is warranted on this one when we go beyond the power negotiation and get into the physics of heat dissipation and other hurdles that had to be overcome. It’s the action packed TechWiseTV you have come to expect!

PCI Compliance Made Simple

September 22, 2011 at 10:16 am PST

ID Please?

Many have argued that the PCI DSS, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard is too complex to be realistic in a real-world environment. Cisco takes the opposite stance maintaining that the principles and security standards contained within the documentation should actually be considered a minimum. The true challenge being not in the implementation but in the ongoing management -- the maintenance if you will.

This show promises to layout a simplified view of the standard with real-world, practical advice where anyone can find exactly how they would apply their unique situation. We have pulled out all the stops with our story-telling and top notch guests as we have members of the standards board, networking experts and certifies QSA auditors joining us.

PCI. It’s not just for Breakfast

It’s amazing how many networks fall into the “compliance required” category.  For PCI it only takes one credit card transaction to be at risk…but rather than focus on the negativity of the required audit – this topic and the maturity of the standard is actually good for ANYONE interested in protecting their data.  You may have the typically binary response as to whether this show applies to you…but I think you need to give it a go.  You may be surprised….the show and the Shownotes are after the jump.

Hands on with the Identify Services Engine

September 20, 2011 at 12:40 pm PST

It is so critical that we make it easier for people to get on and off the network in a secure fashion. Cisco has made incredible strides merging access control platforms that have done well over the years yet still required heavier configuration and/or manual intervention.   Not any longer…The Cisco Identity Services Engine or ISE, is a game changer that has already been well received by the market and yet just keeps improving.

We featured the ISE in one of our Fundamentals animations but felt like even more could be done, especially in light of new wireless only pricing recently rolled out. This is a great step forward for a business looking to make incremental steps potentially starting now in an area that is always in need of improvement, guest access.
