Virtual Switching: Fundamentals of VSS

December 14, 2011 at 6:22 am PST

Cisco’s been doing virtualization in various forms on the network side for quite a long time. One incredibly powerful feature that I think is still amazingly under utilized is the Cisco VSS or Virtual Switching System.

The ability to make two 6500′s look like a single switch so that you can have your cake and eat it too.  Its the epitome of giving us the redundancy and availability we need while simultaneously allowing us to use the extra capacity that could normally sit unused. Easier management and configuration make this a no-brainer that more network managers should consider as ‘required’ in their design. Check out our ‘Fundamentals of VSS‘ to get yourself started.

Even more after the jump…

Our latest TechWiseTV episode is all about the recent announcements rolling out from the Data Center team. We did our best to cram a few handpicked things we liked and give you the detail we thought it deserved.  The theme, and the show title: Evolutionary Fabric, Revolutionary Scale.

The announcements include the most scalable 10 Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2/Layer 3 Fabric in the industry.  The claim is that no matter how diverse your data center demands may be, Cisco offers unparalleled abilities to arm you with efficiency, agility, innovation and differentiation.  So no matter your form factor, physical, virtual or cloud- based environments are all positively impacted with an industry leading fabric-based approach.

Filled with geeky goodness….look at what you will find!

  • 2nd gen Nexus 7000 with revolutionary new scale

Fundamentals of High End Firewalls

November 29, 2011 at 4:25 pm PST

We had fun turning out a few new security oriented fundamentals that we always hope you enjoy.  This one firewall animation is very complimentary to a full TechWiseTV show we recently released..you can see it embedded just after the jump.  Nothing in networking is ever really an apples to apples comparison but it seems like firewall vendors are more full of hot air than anyone.   Read More »

Cisco ASA 1000V: The Cloud Ready Firewall

November 28, 2011 at 11:57 am PST

Juniper Reality

In this show, we cover the new ASA 1000V and how this security family represents the oldest yet most future ready security platform.

What is the relevance of a Firewall in today’s modern world where security must encompass every part of increasingly distributed operations? What is really meant by a Cloud Ready Firewall?  What the heck is this new ‘virtual ASA’…didn’t we already have the Virtual Security Gateway?  Perhaps its all just marketing hype…

Or not.

In my estimation, the cloud is overhyped in the short run, but underestimated in the long run.  Every enterprise is now exploring some aspect of a cloud based service model – whether this represents you now or in the future, the notion of a flexible security solution remains important.  Incredible advances for data center infrastructure with the flexibility and speed enabled by the virtualized tools we are all now using – MUST be accompanied by equally capable security tools.

The original maxim still rings true: Security must be addressed at every layer.

Questions we must answer:

Intrusion Prevention – The Fundamentals

November 22, 2011 at 10:55 am PST

One of the greatest things about having an interest in security…is the fact that it never stops changing. Understanding how threats have evolved over time and getting a strong baseline introduction to this can really help you appreciate the unique combination of hardware, software and most importantly, services that Cisco brings to customers.  Cisco’s Security Intelligence Operations is, in my opinion, is a very under-marketed differentiator for us.  Network World did a fantastic feature on this: Inside Cisco Global Security Operations that is well worth the read. But to prep you for it…I must more strongly recommend 5 minutes of your time…
